As many of you are aware, Adam Sandler will step away from making the comedy flicks that he’s best known for from time to time in order to take on a more dramatic role. We saw this in titles like Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love in 2002, James L. Brooks’ Spanglish in 2004, Mike Binder’s Reign Over Me in 2007, Judd Apatow’s Funny People in 2009, and Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children in 2014.
In the upcoming crime thriller Uncut Gems Sandler returns to drama, playing a jeweler in New York City who is always looking for the next big score. A24 has released an official trailer for the movie, which is the latest from brothers Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, and you can check it out below along with more info.
From acclaimed filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie comes an electrifying crime thriller about Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score. When he makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime, Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.
Starring alongside Sandler in the movie is Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, former NBA superstar Kevin Garnett, Idina Menzel, The Weekend, Eric Bogosian, and Judd Hirsch.
The Safdie brothers previously directed 2017’s Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, as well as Heaven Knows What and Daddy Longlegs. In addition to directing the brothers co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein, who also co-wrote the scripts for the three films mentioned above.
Uncut Gems is set to be released in theaters this December.
Fair warning: the trailer below includes a few naughty words, so some of you may want to save it for after work, when the kids head to bed, etc.
