Blu-ray Review: Night of the Creeps (Collector's Edition)

Night of the Creeps
Blu-Ray (Collector’s Edition)
Director: Fred Dekker
Screenwriter: Fred Dekker
Cast: Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Tom Atkins
Distributor: Scream Factory
Rated R | 88 / 90 Minutes
Release Date: June 25, 2019

“Zombies, exploding heads, creepy-crawlies… and a date for the formal. This is classic, Spanky.”

Written and directed by Fred Dekker (of The Monster Squad and RoboCop 3), Night of the Creeps is a fun, throwback horror comedy that pays homage to ’50s B-movies like The Blob and Plan 9 from Outer Space.

The 1986 film is the latest cult classic to receive a definitive collector’s edition Blu-ray release from Scream Factory, including both the theatrical and director’s cut versions of the movie and a plethora of new bonus features.

Set on the campus of Corman University, Night of the Creeps introduces us to college roommates and best friends, Chris Romero (Jason Lively) and James Carpenter “J.C.” Hooper (Steve Marshall). Chris is head-over-heels in love with Cynthia Cronenberg (Jill Whitlow), so he decides to join a fraternity to impress her. Unfortunately for Chris, Cynthia’s jock boyfriend Brad (Allan J. Kayser of Mama’s Family) is the fraternity president and has decided to make his life a living hell.

Complicating matters is the fact that extra-terrestrial slugs – or creeps – are squirmin’ and slimin’ their way into town to take over the bodies of their human hosts and turn them into zombies. You know, typical space slug behavior. Now it’s up to Chris, J.C., Cynthia and handsome, rugged detective Ray Cameron (Tom Atkins of The Fog, Creepshow, and Halloween III: Season of the Witch) to stop the creepy-crawlies before they take over the world.

Blu-ray Review: Night of the Creeps (Collector's Edition)

Night of the Creeps is a cult classic that, like its contemporaries The Thing, The Fly, and The Blob, is an ’80s-set homage to ’50s sci-fi. While those other films are remakes, Creeps is a spirited love letter to Atomic Age cinema, with plenty of in-jokes and Easter eggs for fans of the genre. If you’ve somehow never seen Dekker’s horror-comedy, it’s a must-watch – and there’s no better time than now with Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition release.

While Dekker’s film has been available on Blu-ray previously, this new edition offers a definitive 1080p high-definition (codec: MPEG-4 AVC, aspect ratio: 1.85:1) that looks and sounds (DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1) great. There’s also an insane amount of new and previously released bonus features, including “Thrill Me! The Making of Night of the Creeps” – a five-part documentary featuring interviews with Dekker, Atkins, Lively, Marshall, Whitlow, producer Charles Gordon, special makeup effects creator David B. Miller, special makeup effects artists Howard Berger and Robert Kurtzman, and more. Also included are:

Special Features

– Tom Atkins: Man of Action – a look at the actor’s career
