Focus Features has released an official trailer for Harriet, an upcoming feature which is based on the life of Harriet Tubman, who was responsible for freeing hundreds of slaves in the 1800s.
The movie stars Cynthia Erivo (Widows, Bad Times at the El Royale) in the title role, with Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures, Moonlight), Leslie Odom Jr. (Red Tails, Murder on the Orient Express), Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, The Favourite), Clarke Peters (The Wire and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and Jennifer Nettles (Underground) joining her on the cast.

Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, HARRIET tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.
Harriet is directed by Kasi Lemmons, who is perhaps best known for her acting with roles in School Daze, Vampire’s Kiss, The Silence of the Lambs, Candyman, Hard Target, and Gridlock’d among others. Behind the camera, she wrote and directed Eve’s Bayou, and also directed The Caveman’s Valentine, Talk to Me, Black Nativity, and an episode of Luke Cage.
Lemmons also co-wrote the screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard, who previously wrote the screenplay for Remember the Titans and the story for Ali.
Debra Martin Chase and Daniela Taplin Lundberg produced the movie.
Harriet is set to be released in theaters on November 1st.
