Gemma Chan

No one really dies in comic books. That saying can be extended to comic book movies like the ones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where characters who died in various movies across different time periods reappear in some form or another in later movies. Usually, this requires the actor to come back to reprise their respective role, with an exception to Hugo Weaving who did not come back to play Red Skull in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But what if an actor came back to the MCU, but for a different role entirely?

Well, that could be the case according to a new report that says Captain Marvel star Gemma Chan is in talks for a role in The Eternals. More on the report below.

Variety says that Chan is in talks to be a part of director Chloe Zhao‘s The Eternals, but could not provide any details as to whether or not she will be reprising her role as Minn-Erva from Captain Marvel. As aforementioned, it wouldn’t be the first time that a character came back, nor would it be the first time that a character came back but for an entirely different movie. Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace appeared as Korath the Pursuer and Ronan the Accuser, respectively, in Guardians of the Galaxy, only to return in Captain Marvel, a film that predates the events of Guardians. So, if Minn-Erva were to return, she could either come back from the dead, or The Eternals takes place at an earlier time than Captain Marvel.

Chan played Minn-Erva, the blue-skinned Kree sniper who was not fond of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Her character would meet a very unfortunate end when Maria Rambeau shot her fighter down.

So if she isn’t coming back from the dead, or if the film doesn’t take place in a different time period, what will happen to Minn-Erva? Well, she could come back as a completely different character. Now, to my recollection, this has never happened before. Hulk and Red Skull were played by different actors. But never has an actor come back to play a different character. So who could she be playing?

There are those who say she could be playing Sersi, a superpowered being who isn’t afraid to walk amongst humankind. It was reported that the role was going to be given to Angelina Jolie. However, it was revealed at SDCC 2019 that she is playing Athena. Given that Sersi is a key character in Eternals lore, it stands to reason that Chan could play the character. Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Don Lee, Lia McHugh, and Kumail Nanjiani also star in The Eternals, which is scheduled to open in theaters November 5, 2020.
