Jurassic World Short Battle At Big Rock

The Jurassic World fanbase was all shook up when Colin Trevorrow announced that he shot a short film that would be tied to the films called Battle at Big Rock and that it would air on FX this week. It came as a huge surprise to many of us, especially since it was a production that virtually went unnoticed. The short takes place a year after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Not that dinosaurs haven’t been running wild in civilized areas before, but now things have definitely changed. And the short will attempt to address how much this world has changed when a family, who are vacationing at Big Rock National Park, confronts these dinosaurs.

Now before Battle at Big Rock makes its debut on FX, Trevorrow has shared a little bit about the upcoming short and how it will tie into the larger Jurassic World universe. Check out what he had to say below.

In an exclusive interview with Collider, Trevorrow says the project was a secret due in large part to where they filmed the short. He tells them that it was shot at in Ireland last winter, just outside of Dublin where the redwoods could double as national parks in Northern California. Since a Jurassic Park or Jurassic World film has never been shot in Ireland, Trevorrow says the crew was “fired up.”

In regards how to the short came about, Trevorrow said:

“Universal asked if I’d be interested in making a short film and I didn’t give them any time to reconsider. I wrote it with Emily Carmichael, who is co-writing Jurassic World 3. It felt like a first step into a larger world after the last film. You have these animals loose in an unfamiliar environment, they’re disoriented, struggling to adapt. The first people they run into are bound to be camping. I wanted to see that.”

Since this is an eight-minute short, Trevorrow has a much smaller budget and a limited number of resources to work with. While it was something he wasn’t accustomed to, he welcomed those limitations as it allowed everyone involved to kick ass.

One of the most notable (and important) things about Battle At Big Rock is the diversity in the cast. Something of which has been a bit lacking in recent films. Trevorrow, recognized the importance of having people, particularly young kids, see themselves in something like this:

“It matters that kids see themselves up on screen, and it’s important to create all kinds of heroes. This family is from Oakland, which is a hugely diverse community, it felt natural. The baby even wears an Oaklandish shirt, which I’m sure people from the Town will spot. I love these characters, I’d watch a whole movie with them.”

On the creative side of things, Larry Fong handles the short’s cinematography and Amie Doherty will compose the score for the short, using themes and music from the previous films composers like John Williams and Michael Giacchino.

For more on the short, including how many days it was shot, how they kept the project a secret from the cast, the need for the short before Jurassic World 3, the two new never-before-seen dinosaurs that will appear, new images, and more, check out Collider‘s report.

Battle at Big Rock debuts exclusively on FX on September 15th, after the evening broadcast of Jurassic World.
