Hardcover | Kindle
By Owen Brooks
Publisher: Adams Media
Release date: October 8, 2019

Since the beginning of time, humans have had an insatiable thirst for forbidden knowledge, and even though history has shown we’ve gotten into a lot of trouble for it, still our quest to learn more continues. That’s probably why Adams Media has continued to release new installments in their Forbidden Knowledge line of books for over a decade now.

This time around, author Owen Brooks has compiled instructions for 101 Things No One Should Know How to Do, which is basically a simplified survival guide for unlikely and/or preposterous scenarios, several of which are also dangerous and sometimes criminal. Some is stuff you shouldn’t have to know, but just in case, it tells you what to do.

For instance, let’s hope you don’t ever have to amputate a limb, but you know, the guy in 127 hours got stuck while rock climbing and he had to do it, so… And what about landing an airplane? Unless you’re a trained pilot, you shouldn’t ever have to be in a position where you HAVE TO land a plane. But I’ll be honest, this was a great concern of mine growing up: that I’d be on a plane and somehow it would be up to me to land it. Then there’s the old “tough it out in a foreign jail” situation. There’s always the chance your girls trip to Thailand gets ruined after your friend meets a really cute guy who, unbeknownst to you, is a drug smuggler who then implicates you in his operation. It happened to Claire Danes!

So, those are the some of useful tidbits, because, again, you just never know. But then there’s the criminal (how to get a fake passport; commit identity fraud; cheat at gambling, stage an insurance scam) and the super dangerous (free climb the Eiffel Tower, which is probably also criminal; climb the Pyramids; eat blowfish in Japan). So, umm… maybe steer clear of those.

Plus, I’m not sure some of these will actually work, like traveling to the future, placing a gypsy curse, finding Atlantis (which I’d totally love to do), and getting paid to do nothing, so don’t get your hopes up too much with those.

Or, you know, just take this guide for what it is: light-hearted entertainment (please).

Though Forbidden Knowledge: 101 Things No One Should Know How to Do is as silly as it is informative, it will temporarily quench your thirst for the verboten. Though you’ll probably want to do more than read a few paragraphs for subjects like navigating a minefield and walking on hot coals. Oh, and maybe leave finding the Ark of the Covenant up to Indiana Jones.

More than 100 hilarious and ridiculous things that you should never, ever do in real life.

We all know that we should never fight a tiger or become a mafia boss, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t funny and fascinating to learn about. Forbidden Knowledge offers a collection of the most ridiculous things that you should never attempt in real life””but will make you laugh none the less. You’ll learn everything from how to take over a cult to swimming with piranhas to how to build an atomic bomb or escape from prison.

Forbidden Knowledge invites you to embrace the absurd with pranks that are sure to make you laugh. With over 100 extremely bad ideas that you should never do, this entertaining and light-hearted book makes each hilarious scenario so much fun to imagine.
