Amazon Echo & Dish Hopper

In case you needed another reason to go Alexa rather than Google, the media gods have got one for you. The avalanche of CES 2017 press conferences hadn’t even begun when the news came in from Dish Network. In addition to their Sling Box and their 2014 breakthrough, no-contract live-streaming cable service, SlingTV, Dish decided to take another leap forward in delivering television entertainment to their consumers — support for Amazon‘s Alexa Voice Services or AVS.

Dish users with Hopper DRV devices of any generation will be able to control them using their voice through Amazon’s Echo or Echo Dot hardware.

When I was a kid there was no greater 2-hour block of TV than 3:00 – 5:00 after school on FOX. It was 4 straight kickass cartoons, all of which launched me into action figure glory. The shows were She-Ra, He-Man, Thundercats, and Voltron. As for Voltron, memories of my Dad dashing around Brooklyn to various Toys R-Us locations in an effort get me all five lion toys that together would combine to form Voltron. In my house phrases like “I’ll form the head”, and “Form blazing sword” were common speak. Nearly 30 years later, Netflix has brought the series into its growing array of original programing with an 11-episode opening season that premiered on Netflix just this week. The show features the voice talents of Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil), Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time), Bex Taylor-Klaus (MTV’s Scream), Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series), and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead).

If you’re a horror movie fan, you are constantly on the lookout for something of substance and quality. Sometimes, rarely, one of those films finds their way into the mainstream. Last year it was David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows that took horror fans by storm. Too often though, more than any other genre, horror gets bogged down in cash grab sequels, and pointless tone deaf remakes. When all the theatres can churn out are another Paranormal Activity or Purge film, fans must look to other places. Enter the wonderful streaming universe. This week, I was messaged on Facebook by a fellow horror-nut who recommended Hush, currently streaming on Netflix. When I looked it up and saw who the director was, I quickly grabbed for the remote.

Spoilers below.
