The Lion King and Aladdin Broadway Cast Sing-Off

No one ever wants to find out that their flight has been delayed, forcing them to figure out different ways to keep their quickly numbing brain occupied until things get back on schedule. So here’s a slice of fried gold life tip for all of you: if you’re going to end up getting stuck at an airport, make sure that Broadway performers are stuck at said airport with you!

The casts of both The Lion King and Aladdin Broadway shows were traveling from New York to Orlando when their flight was delayed. Instead of sitting around playing Sudoku or whatever it is kids do to keep themselves busy these days, they used their talents to lighten the mood in the terminal. Just one Broadway cast singing their songs would be a pleasant surprise for anyone else stuck in an airport (aside from those without souls, of course), but when two casts from different productions are present? It can mean only one thing: a sing-off!

It begins with the Lion King cast singing one of the many familiar songs associated with their production. Instead of countering with another classic tune, the Aladdin crew, led by Tony Award-winning Genie actor James Monroe Iglehart (whose tribute to Genie counterpart Robin Williams can be watched right here), went full rap battle in playful riposte. And it continued from there. You can check out the video of the two sides trading lyrical blows below.

“When you read, don’t just consider what the author thinks, consider what you think.”

So true are the words of John Keating, the character from the movie Dead Poets Society portrayed by Robin Williams in an Oscar-nominated performance. The actor’s death, tragic in that a man who gave the world so much joy could never appear to possess joy himself, continues to startle Hollywood. There are few performers we could call “genius,” but Williams was one of them, an irrefutably gifted comic-turned-actor who was as much a poetic dramatic actor as he was a comedic revelation.

Aladdin Broadway musical logo

Many tributes to Robin Williams have surface since the actor’s passing on Monday, one of which was a new beautiful image released by The Walt Disney Company of the Genie, the character that Williams so iconically voiced in Disney’s 1992 animated film Aladdin.

The film was adapted for the stage in 2011, and earlier this year it made its Broadway debut. At the end of yesterday’s performance at NYC’s New Amsterdam Theatre, the cast of Disney’s Aladdin musical paid tribute to Williams by leading the audience in a rousing singalong of the Genie’s signature song, “Friend Like Me.”

You can watch the fan-filmed video here below of the singalong, which was led by James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the Genie on stage. (UPDATE – Disney has released a video of the tribute as well, which is now here below.)

Robin Williams in Disney's Flubber

While the world is still in shock over the death of Robin Williams, those who knew and loved the 63-year-old old actor are taking to social media to pay tribute to him. People like Edgar Wright, Conan O’Brien, John Travolta, Bill Cosby, and Ben Stiller, along with former co-stars, musicians, and many many more have been sharing their thoughts about the Academy Award-winning actor, who made so many people smile with his work on and off screen.

Robin Williams appeared in several projects for the Walt Disney Company, including TV’s Mork & Mindy, 1988’s Good Morning, Vietnam (for which he earned his first Oscar nod), and the 1992 animated feature Aladdin, in which he voiced the Genie. In tribute, the studio released an image of the Genie in the sky created from stars. See the image here below.
