Holiday Gift Geek Guide 2012: Music

Lots of sonic platters of joy are ready to be served up this holiday season, and what better gift to give someone than the universal appeal of music? During this festive time, when credit card debts mount up, layaway plans become way too unmanageable, and the stress of owing money takes charge over one’s soul and wallet as the new year turns, it’s still worth the feeling one gets when one sees someone’s eyes light up when they tear the wrapping paper off a gift, positively effused with sincere delight at its contents. We all still do it, we all get by, we grumble as the new year rolls in, but it’s all worth it; gifts are cool, no doubt, gifts never go out of style, and the end result of giving someone a gift makes it all worth it. Music was no exception this year. There were some great collections for one to gnaw on, collections which run every genre and will turn even the most hard hardened curmudgeon of a Scrooge into the softest teddy bear imaginable, even if it’s only for one holiday. My holiday box set picks are below, this one goes to eleven:

Alice Cooper

Remember back in October we reported that Alice Cooper would be playing himself in Tim Burton‘s upcoming movie Dark Shadows? Well, we haven’t heard much since then about the casting and the shock rocker was noticeably absent from the film’s domestic trailer, which was released last week.

Now, the international trailer has been released and guess who pops up in it at the end? That’s right, Alice Cooper – yeah!!!

Watch the international trailer here below.

Alice Cooper

After being on the receiving of some mighty bad buzz last month all has been quiet on the production front of Tim Burton‘s big-screen adaptation of the classic Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. But a recent development has temporarily shone the spotlight on the movie in the form of the recently-announced casting of Alice Cooper, the star of such films as Sextette, Monster Dog, Prince of Darkness, and Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (his performance as Freddy Krueger’s stepfather had Oscar gold written all over it-damn you Jack Palance). Apparently when Cooper isn’t acting he’s indulging his secret passion for making music, something he has been doing for more than four decades. Who knew?

Music Review: Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare

Alice Cooper
Welcome 2 My Nightmare
Universal Music Enterprises
Released September 12, 2011 UK: CD | MP3
September 13, 2011 U.S.: CD | MP3

After the disbandment of the Alice Cooper band, its frontman went solo and in 1975 released his first album: Welcome To My Nightmare. 36 years later Alice Cooper has released its follow-up, Welcome 2 My Nightmare. And you thought Chinese Democracy took a long time to make.

Ok, ok, so it’s not the same thing. Alice has released 17 albums in between (not including the many live albums and countless best of’s) and been constantly busy. His albums have ranged from the brilliant (Hey Stoopid) to boring (Dragontown). Those who were disappointed with 2008’s Along Came A Spider will be delighted with this return to gruesome form.

As with most of Alice’s past albums, much of this is playful in a twisted way. The one-two of the beautiful “Something To Remember Me By” followed by a tale of grizzly revenge in “When Hell Comes Home” is sure to raise an evil smile.

Revolver Golden Gods

Spock may not think the merging of Shatner and Metal to be a logical one — but at this point in 2011, William Shatner is becoming more metal than ever. And even at his age of 80, there seems to be no stopping the once Captain of the USS Enterprise, for this year he will be releasing a metal album, as we reported on several weeks ago. To acknowledge his efforts not only towards his current album project, entitled Seeking Major Tom, but also for his entire epic career, William Shatner will next month be awarded the Honorary Headbanger Award at the annual Revolver Awards.

The Revolver Golden Gods is an awards ceremony to recognize all metal, held every year. The Honorary Headbanger Award is handed out to someone who is not necessarily seen as being in the metal community, but embodies the spirit of metal. With his upcoming album featuring collaborative efforts with numerous metal artists, and his long career in Star Trek and acting in other roles over the years, Shatner is an artist of determination who continually breaks down the doors of what people think he should do (or if people just think it to be… odd).

Rock Legend Alice Cooper To Be Inducted Into Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Industry insiders are reporting that rock and metal legend Alice Cooper will finally be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on March 14, 2011 at its 26th yearly induction ceremony.

Alice Cooper began as the lead singer and frontman of the band of the same name with the release of their debut album, Pretties For You, in 1969. Cooper launched his solo career in 1975 with the release of the concept album, Welcome To My Nightmare, an epic recording that was produced by the brilliant Bob Ezrin.

Cooper established himself firmly in the era of shock rock and early glam metal — his career spanning beyond 30 years, and releasing songs such as School’s Out, Poison, Hey Stoopid, and Brutal Planet. He is known for his concept albums, and theatrical live performance that featured the “execution of Alice Cooper” every night — usually portrayed as death by guillotine. He’s left such an impact on the music world and would eventually become a massive influence on almost all sub-genre of metal.

space
Empress Eve   |  @   |
space

I just noticed that there’s an offer on Amazon’s MP3 page for a FREE download of the Eagle-Armoury Records 2009 Metal/Hard Rock Sampler.

The album’s name probably means nothing to all of you, as it meant nothing to me at first glance, but, all I need to see is the word ‘metal’ and I’m checkin it out. Turns out there’s 10 great hard rock/heavy metal tunes on the album from bands like Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Dio, Twisted Sister, and Black Label Society.

Now, listen to me when I say this: This album is FREE. FREE. FREE. No obligations, no commitments, no nothing. DOWNLOAD THIS NOW. If you’re new to metal, you’ll at least benefit from getting Dio’s “Holy Diver” if nothing else. Let’s put it this way: I am the biggest metalhead you’ll ever know – I already own most of these songs in every medium possible, yet I downloaded the album.

Check out the full track listing here below and then go grab this baby for yourself. You can thank me later. \m/\m/

Sex PistolsThe spotlight MP3 deal of the week at Amazon is the classic Sex Pistols album Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols for only $1.99! This would definitely top my list of perfect albums ever made. If you don’t already own this album, seriously, YOU MUST GET THIS. C’mon, you get 12 awesome songs for under two bucks, that’s insane! If you think you don’t know the Sex Pistols, you’re probably wrong. “God Save The Queen,” ever heard of it? No? THEN BUY THIS ALBUM FOR $1.99! Seriously, not one bad song. I own this album in every format already, but for this price, I swear I’d buy it again.

Here’s some other notable MP3 albums available now for $5 and under:

Alice Cooper Goes To Hell ($4.97): Hailed as “one of the best albums ever made” by Dave3 of Geeks of Doom. Long before Jason went below, shock rocker Alice Cooper made the journey underworld with this classic 1976 sequel to the far more recognized Welcome To My Nightmare.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Once More With Feeling ($5): I’m sure very fan of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series already owns this soundtrack to the infamous musical episode (#107), but for those of you still working your way through that tremendous Complete Series DVD boxset, trust me when you hit this episode in Season 6, you’re gonna want this album – so snag it now for only five bucks.

Slumdog Millionaire Music From The Motion Picture ($5): This indie darling could just be the next Oscar-winning film come February and its soundtrack has been getting tons of praise as well. The entire album is up for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, while two of its songs were nominated for Best Original Song.

Dokken Alone Again & Other Hits ($4.97): If you dig hair metal contenders Dokken back in the 1980s, then this is a great deal on their greatest hits. For under five bucks, you get some great tunes like “Alone Again,” “In My Dreams,” and “Breaking The Chains,” but more importantly, it comes with “Dream Warriors,” the title track from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors! [“… don’t wanna dream no more!”]. Yes, yes, yes, a must-have, for sure.
