Marvel Avengers: Age Of Ultron Scarlet Witch Elizabeth Olsen, Joss Whedon, Hawkeye behind the scenes

Joss Whedon has been a creative consultant on the MCU since 2012, but The Avengers director’s contract with Marvel Studios ends this year. While it may seem like his upcoming Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be a surefire hit, it doesn’t necessarily mean the filmmaker is ready to take on the film’s two-part sequel, Avengers: Infinity War.

Any news following yesterday’s Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler filled rumor will be sort of a tough act to follow. But when it comes straight from the directors, it tends to be a bit more exciting since that’s very reliable source.

While the recent rumors have yet to be confirmed, sibling directors Anthony and Joe Russo were in Beijing today where they talked to Sina.com about Captain America: Civil War. The two confirmed that Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. She will be joined by Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/The Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, and Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow, and possibly Jeremy Renner returning as Hawkeye, as well as newcomers Daniel Bruhl, who is playing a mysterious role, and Chadwick Boseman who making his MCU debut as Black Panther.

Hit the jump to see what the Russo brothers had to say.

Anthony Mackie The Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel Comics has made a few changes to their characters in the past few weeks. It first started out with revealing that Thor will be a woman. Series writer Jason Aaron emphasized, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.” Then it was announced that The Falcon would become the new Captain America. While these changes show how progressive the comic book giant can be, there was a lot of speculation on how the changes would impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since many of the actors’ contracts will expire after The Avengers 3.

It would make sense to make these changes in the films to coincide with the changes in comics. But, wait just one moment. Like any adaptation, the films don’t always follow their source materials to the letter, and screenwriters and directors are always taking creative liberties with these comic book properties. That’s why Captain America 3 scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely say that we shouldn’t expect to see Falcon become Captain America in the next sequel, but they don’t want fans to give up hope on the idea either. Hit the jump for more.
