Drake's Fortune

Kyle Ward, who wrote the script for the Kane & Lynch movie, and was just reported to be writing the sequel to Hitman, has now been given a third video game movie writing job: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

The popular Playstation 3 game from Sony Computer Entertainment is being developed into a movie by Columbia Pictures, with Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad and his brother Ari Arad‘s Arad Productions producing the movie. Also producing will be Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment.

Drake’s Fortune tells the story of Nathan Drake, an adventurer and descendant of actual explorer Sir Francis Drake, who discovers a diary by his late ancestor that leads the way to the fabled city of gold: El Dorado. As usual, when trying to discover some of the universe’s greatest treasures, things don’t go so well; between rival seekers of the gold city and mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis trying to stop him, Nathan Drake is obviously in for a challenge and a kick-ass adventure.

Mass EffectFormer Marvel CEO and Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad has obtained the rights to the incredibly popular recent video game, Mass Effect.

Arad has been a producer on pretty much every Marvel movie released — including the Spider-Man movies and Iron Man — and will still continue to produce some of their movies as he embarks on this new venture. His new company, Avi Arad Productions, produced the non-Marvel flick Bratz: The Movie and now looks to try and bring Mass Effect to the big screen.

Many will think a Mass Effect movie would never work, as the game allows you to create your own male or female character, choose all sorts of different potentially plot-changing paths, and even allows you to choose what you say in every one of the hundreds of conversations you’ll have. The fact is, none of that really matters. Some things that happen by choice are massive points of the story, but the core storyline is always the same and this would enable film makers to put together the best story they can build and even have some extra stuff to work with while still being faithful. Not many have that kind of breathing room with an adaptation.

Captain AmericaCaptain America is coming to the big screen! But don’t hold your breath waiting for it — the film won’t be out until 2009.

IGN’s Film Force reports that screenwriter David Self, who adapted Road to Perdition for the silver screen, is working on the script. Self has also worked on Marvel’s movie adaptations of Sub-Mariner and Deathlok.

Marvel producer Avi Arad recently said, “Without giving too much away, obviously there’ll be a little bit of the origin and then we come into our real world. What makes Captain America such a compelling character is that it allows you to judge history so you see where he came from and you see what he stood for.”
