Sound City Documentary

Sound City
Director: Dave Grohl
Screenwriter: Mark Monroe
Cast: Neil Young, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Rick Rubin, Mick Fleetwood, Lars Ulrich, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Paul McCartney

Directed by Dave Grohl, Sound City focuses on the history of the legendary Van Nuys, CA studio for which it is named — where artists like Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, and countless others created classic records over the past 40 years — and the never-ending fight to preserve the human element of music in a digital world.

Through interviews with legendary musicians and producers, Sound City uncovers the magic within the walls of that studio and culminates with many of those legends creating a new album on the same legendary Neve console that produced so many hits.

Album Deal: Nirvana ‘In Utero’ For $5

Nirvana

In Utero, the final studio album by 1990s grunge monarchs Nirvana, is now available on CD from Amazon for only $4.99 and is an “AutoRip” selection, which means if you purchase the CD, you’ll ALSO get the MP3 download for FREE.

The highly anticipated follow up release to Nevermind, which surprised everyone (most of all the band), 1993’s In Utero found a record which, while it may not have went down as the punk-filled smooth full of dirty sugar which made the medicine go down as its predecessor, remains arguably the better album, filled with a more punchy concrete production, more arranged songs, better musicality, and stern, loudspeaker style vocals by the late Kurt Cobain. Cobain and the band (Krist Novocelic and Dave Grohl on bass and drums respectively) goosestep with shiny musical metal boots all over this one, Cobain’s lyrics seem more mature, even though they are still steeped in his intimidated, fragility in a dirty sweater his physicality had oddly endeared him to a world he wasn’t prepared to embrace. Songs like the MTV rotated “Heart Shaped Box” and “Scentless Apprentice,” “Serve The Servants,” “Very Ape,” “Milk It,” “Rape Me,” and the longish at least in its title, but strongest in its musicality, “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle” stand right up there and fit nicely with the band’s other releases, and there’s even a portent of things that could have been with the Kinks-stylings of “Pennyroyal Tea.” This album has two more high profile records which bookend it, the aforementioned Nevermind and the Unplugged in New York live album which followed it, but In Utero is still not to be forgotten and is much more than an artifact from the era of the Seattle slew that permeated the charts and fabric of Generation X.

Tenacious D

In anticipation of the release of their forthcoming CD The Rize of the Fenix (their first in six years, due out this May) the greatest rock band in the world has returned for their first music video in what seems like ages. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, Tenacious D – the folk metal duo consisting of musically gifted funnymen Jack Black and Kyle Gass – are back to rock our socks off with more rock guaranteed to melt your tits.

You can check out their epic promotional short film “To Be The Best” here below.

The D first appeared in a three-episode HBO comedy series that aired from 1997 to 2000. They released their first full-length album in 2001 and within four years it had gone platinum. In 2006, the duo made their big screen debut in the hilarious rock musical Tenacious D In The Pick of Destiny, but the film was a box office flop. Since its release on DVD it has become a cult film. Black and Gass also released a soundtrack album packed with original songs.

Foo Fighters in Kansas City

On Friday night, the Foo Fighters played a show at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and on hand to show their own special brand of support were members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, who brought out their trusty signs and hate-filled chants to express their umbrage at any person, group, or organization that doesn’t share their black-hearted hostility towards homosexuals. In their own puckish manner, the Foos decided to show their appreciation for the Westboro group’s venom by putting on a special concert just for them. They filmed the performance and their preparation and you can watch the video of it all here below.
