David Cronenberg To Remake His Own Horror Classic ‘The Fly’

The Fly

The bad news is that David Cronenberg‘s 1986 horror classic The Fly will be run through the gauntlet and given the remake treatment by Fox. The good news though, is that Cronenberg himself will be handling the directing duties here, and possibly even writing the script.

The ’86 film we’re all familiar with was also a remake of the original 1958 film of the same name, so this is no sacred desecration, either. The movies tell the story of a scientist (Jeff Goldblum) who creates two vessels that will transport any object from one to the other, which if successful, would mean the creation of teleportation. While testing out his massive breakthrough, a small fly enters the vessel with him un-noticed, and the system becomes confused at the second life form. To fix this problem, it takes both the scientist and the fly’s genetic particles, and combines them. Over a period of time, he slowly transforms into a hideous and horrific human/fly hybrid and begins taking desperate measures to try and fix himself.

Eastern Promises

In one of the more unexpected movie sequel announcements, it looks like director David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen will be making a follow-up to 2007’s Eastern Promises.

The thinking here is that the ending of Eastern Promises left a whole lot more story to be told. Even though Cronenberg isn’t one to do sequels, another reason he wants to do this is because he very much enjoys working with Mortensen, saying that he “…consider him personal friend,” and that he is a “…very special guy.” This would mark the third project for the pair, which started with A History of Violence.

Here is what Cronenberg thinks of sequels in general, as well as why this one could work:

I’ve never had the desire to do that before. But in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didn’t feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie.

A History of ViolenceA History of Violence
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by David Cronenberg
Starring Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, William Hurt, Ed Harris

“A History of Violence” didn’t get much exposure during its theatrical run, but you can catch it on DVD March 14. In the film, based on the graphic novel of the same name, Viggo Mortensen plays against type as Tom Stall, a meek small-town family man who’s instantly transformed into a local hero after he overpowers two thieves attempting to rob his diner. But his newfound fame brings attention from more than just his neighbors when a disfigured big-city crime boss out for revenge arrives claiming that Tom is actually Joey Cusack, a former mob underling. Can Tom prove his innocence or is he really a criminal with a history of violence?

EXTRAS: Director David Cronenberg offers commentary. Plus, there are a deleted scene, a documentary called “Acts of Violence,” and three featurettes — “Violence’s History: U.S. Vs. International Versions,” “Too Commercial for Cannes” and “The Unmaking of Scene 44.”
