Wonder Woman First Look

NBC has been known for producing some pretty unwatchable shows in the past — the later seasons of Heroes and The Cape jump to mind — but even they see things for what they are before it’s too late on occasion.

It’s being reported that NBC has chosen to pass up on the Wonder Woman TV series they once saved from death. After many attempts to make the heroine into a movie, Warner Brothers decided to try the TV format. At one point it looked like no one would even touch the show, which was being developed by David E. Kelley, but then rose NBC, out of the shadows to pay some major coin to give Wonder Woman her shot.

In case you haven’t been following the madness of a proposed Wonder Woman anything, allow us to catch you up quickly!

First up came the hopes for a big feature film adaptation with Joss Whedon behind the script. This never worked out in the end. When a movie didn’t work, it was decided to try and make a new Wonder Woman TV series with showrunner David E. Wonder WomanDavid E. Kelley shopped a Wonder Woman pitch to the networks late last year only to get the proverbial door slammed in his face over and over again [read: Proposed “˜Wonder Woman’ TV Series Meets More Rejection]. So fans thought, rightfully so, that their dreams of seeing the heroine on the small screen were dashed, but the new NBC Entertainment president Bob Greenblatt has saved the day by picking up Kelley’s script.

Kelley’s upcoming series Harry’s Law and the support of the new President both helped NBC commit to the series and to the steep licensing fee. The series is described as a reinvention of the classic DC Comics comic book with Wonder Woman being a vigilante crime fighter, a successful corporate executive, and modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life. This is familiar territory for Kelley who has had success in the past writing these modern woman types of stories with previous shows such as Ally McBeal and The Practice.

This past October we were informed that after many failed attempts to turn Wonder Woman into a popular movie franchise, DC Comics would be teaming up with Warner Brothers TV and top-tier showrunner, David E. Kelley, in hopes of developing a new TV series based on the popular comic book heroine.

Sadly, for fans of the superhero who have been itching to see her in some form of modern live-action entertainment, this day will not come any time soon.

After writing a spec script for the pilot episode, Kelley and friends set off to make their pitch to the various networks. Fox turned them down, as did ABC, who are owned by Disney, the company that purchased Marvel for $4 billion. You can see where that might be an issue.
