| Watch the Original and Extended ‘John Carter’ Super Bowl TV Spots
Walt Disney Pictures premiered a new television spot for their upcoming big-budget sci-fi adventure John Carter last night during the Super Bowl and later released an extended version of the preview online. You can watch both videos here below. Both versions of the preview begin with a montage of scenes from John Carter that slowly reveal to form the film’s title, which would be a kick to watch if not for the fact that both the title and the logo font are awful. Go with the extended spot which delivers lots more action, sumptuous Martian vistas, and leapin’ Taylor Kitsch a-plenty!

| Watch Now: Test Footage For Proposed ‘John Carter of Mars’ Animated Feature From 1936 |
 |

A Princess of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ timeless novel of intergalactic adventure and intrigue that introduced one of science fiction’s most enduring and iconic heroes in Captain John Carter, has seen many fits and starts in its journey from page to screen that will end in less than two months when Andrew Stanton‘s live-action debut John Carter hits the big screen. Prior to Stanton’s involvement the property passed through the hands of directors such as John McTiernan, Robert Rodriguez, Kerry Conran, and Jon Favreau over the years. But when talk first began of bringing the adventures of John Carter to life via the magic of celluloid it was a much different time, and it wasn’t intended to be a live-action adaptation. In 1931, nearly two decades after the publication of A Princess of Mars, author Burroughs approached early animation pioneer Bob Clampett about possibly making a full-length animated John Carter feature. Working with Burroughs’ son John Coleman, Clampett spent a year beginning in 1935 producing a reel of test footage for the proposed John Carter feature hoping to garner the interest of a major Hollywood studio. You can watch Clampett’s test footage, complete with the animator’s narration, here below.

| Watch Now: Kerry Conran’s Original Test Footage For ‘John Carter Of Mars’ |
 |

In less than two months Disney will premiere John Carter, the long-gestating adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ classic 1912 sci-fi adventure A Princess of Mars that introduced readers to Captain John Carter and his spectacular adventures on the planet Barsoom (which we all refer to as Mars). When the Andrew Stanton-directed movie finally opens it will be the culmination of more than eight decades of failed efforts on the part of filmmakers such as John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator), Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City), Jon Favreau (Iron Man), and even famed stop motion animation wizard Ray Harryhausen. Back in 2004, when the project was in development at Paramount Pictures, the responsibility of bringing John Carter of Mars to the big screen was temporarily handed to relative newcomer Kerry Conran. During his time on the film Conran put together a test reel to demonstrate how he would approach such an ambitious and potentially costly production. You can watch Conran’s original John Carter of Mars presentation video here below.
