The trailer for Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World is now online.

Scorsese’s latest effort is a documentary on the life of the late Beatle George Harrison and includes rare and unseen footage, as well as interviews with his wife Olivia and son Dhani Harrison; his Beatles bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and the late John Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono. There’s also interviews with friends and colleagues like Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Eric Idle, Phil Spector, and Tom Petty.

Despite the geektastic union of James Bond and Indiana Jones sharing the same 40 feet of screen for the very first time, Cowboys & Aliens remains, after a distractedly puzzling 2 hours, a study of “˜Oh, what could/should have been’. You leave as the credits roll not necessarily dissatisfied, but with the niggling feeling that, considering the pedigree of those involved in front of and behind the camera, this movie should be a lot better than it is.

In terms of Steven Spielberg-produced alien invasion flicks, C&A is leagues better than June’s 80’s nostalgia theme restaurant Super 8. It appears that 1880s evil aliens have a lot more going for it than 1980s weepy bitch aliens.

However, if the thought of seeing Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford together is just too enticing, then by all means go. Just make sure your expectations are roped nicely in check, for though the names Spielberg, producer Ron Howard, Lost‘s Damon Lindelof contributing to the screenplay, and Iron Man director Jon Favreau may lead you to expect genre transcendence, you may just have to be satisfied by the very averageness of the production.

February 7, 1964: Beatlemania Begins

It was a cold February day at the newly-renamed John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City. At about 1:20PM, Pan Am flight 101 landed to the excitement of the 3,000 screaming fans who had been waiting patiently all morning. Four young lads from Liverpool, England, were about to step onto U.S. soil and change the world forever. The Beatles had arrived in America. The British Invasion had begun.

Timing played a huge role in the Beatles success in the United States. It’s easy to forget that when the Fab Four arrived, Americans were still mourning the loss of their slain President John F. Kennedy, who had been shot down less than three months prior. Violence in Vietnam was escalating rapidly. The country desperately needed a distraction from the harsh realities they had been made to face.

Believe it or not, there was a time when The Beatles wanted to star in a live-action adaptation of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, with Stanley Kubrick to direct. The cast would be Paul McCartney as Frodo Baggins, Ringo Starr as Sam Gamgee (both as hobbits), George Harrison as the wizard Gandalf, and John Lennon as the creature Gollum, but either Kubrick wasn’t on board for it or Tolkien killed it (it’s unclear which).

Obviously, that would have been an interesting project that unfortunately we’ll never get to see. But artist Shane Parker has decided to give us his depiction of what the Beatles in the LoTR could have looked like with his Abbey Road-LoTR mash-up “Moria Road.”

Abbey Road Crossing, where the iconic photo of The Beatles was taken for their Abbey Road album, has been designated a heritage site.

The photo of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr walking single-file along the north London zebra crossing (as it’s known in the UK) was included on the album’s sleeve and is one of the most famous pictures of The Beatles. Abbey Road Crossing, which is outside the Abbey Road Studios where the 1969 album was recorded, is already a tourist attraction that thousands of people flock to each year to recreate the famous image.
