Benicio Del Toro

Marvel Studios’ summer 2014 sci-fi superhero blockbuster hopeful Guardians of the Galaxy hasn’t even gone before the cameras yet, but it has insane amounts of press and brownie points for assembling what has to be the most eclectic cast ever seen in a comic book adaptation.

In the past week alone the James Gunn-directed movie has added former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan and Oscar nominees Glenn Close and John C. Reilly to an acting ensemble that already included Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, David Bautista, and Lee Pace. Now, we can add to that line-up a bonafide Oscar winner.

Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline has reported that Benicio Del Toro, who won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in 2001 for his performance in Steven Soderbergh’s epic drama Traffic and has also given standout performances in The Usual Suspects and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, has joined the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy in a role that is still being kept under wraps.

Glenn Close May Join Guardians Of The Galaxy

What sounds like it came out from The Onion may actually have some weight to it. Considering all the big names and Oscar-nominated directors that Marvel Studios have been able to sign on in the past, Glenn Close possibly joining the cast of James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy comes as no surprise. The news comes hot off the heels that the studio was in talks with John C. Reilly, who would play Rhonamm Dey, a character that has been described as the “face of humanity” would be an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and act as the Guardians’ liaison.

According to Deadline, Close would play the leader of the Nova Corps, which has been described as “the intergalactic space patrol.” The character that she is the running for could be compared to the kind of character Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was in The Avengers movie.

Filming is expected to begin in June, so we should get a confirmation of the recent casting rumors that have been surfacing in the past few weeks, plus whether or not Zoe Saldana is officially signed on to play Gamora. This role could also be the so called “peer” role that Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman, and Ken Watanabe are on the shortlist for.

The Touch of Evil

The Christmas season is supposed to be a time for people to come together and be the best they can be to each other.
