Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man Captain America: Civil War

At first, the idea of Iron Man 4 it started out as a slip of the tongue when Robert Downey Jr. said he would be interested in the film. This was then quickly clarified with the actor backtracking on the statement. It had been reported that the actor would only be contracted for a few more films, particularly the Avengers sequels. However, that all changed when it was announced that Iron Man would have a major role in Captain America: Civil War. Some thought that the film could be mistaken for Iron Man 4, to which Downey Jr. assured that Civil War would be Captain America’s film. He went on to say that Iron Man 4 is definitely not on the table. Then the actor signed on to be in Spider-Man: Homecoming, something that had been speculated for a long time.

Now it is looking more like Iron Man 4 may actually happen. Emphasis on may. More on the story below.

Iron Man Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War is as advertised. It’s a Captain America movie, despite the film having A-list heroes who had their own films in the past like Iron Man and Spider-Man – and in the future, Black Panther. There have been some rumblings of an Iron Man 4 being in the cards after Robert Downey Jr. had renegotiated his contract with Marvel. Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow both said it was very unlikely that the sequel would happen.

Still, there are fans who are hoping that it will happen, and some might go as far as to look at Captain America: Civil War as Iron Man 4. So now the actor has gone on record to clarify the matter. Check out what he had to say below.

Iron Man 3: Mark 42 and Tony

It really should come as no surprise that there won’t be an Iron Man 4 coming any time soon. Seeing how Robert Downey Jr. was goaded into saying there will be an Iron Man sequel on Ellen just so that people can stop pestering him about it, the actor appeared on Letterman to do some damage control yesterday and clear up the air.

This would have meant that Avengers 3 was going to be off the table, since his updated contract called for him to appear in two more Marvel films, Avengers: Age of Ultron being one of them. Since the Iron Man 4 news isn’t true, then it’s safe to say that he will be rescuing earth from all kinds of threats.

But the actor doesn’t just stop there; he confirms that there are more films coming, and that he is working closely with Marvel. But is this just another trick from him? Hit the jump to check out the video.

Iron Man 3 Image

It only seems fitting that we at least get one Iron Man film per Marvel phase, considering the character was the one who helped launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He had two solo films in Phase One, and one in Phase Two. He will also have starring roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3, but there is currently no plans for an Iron Man 4 film, and it looks like there won’t be one anytime soon.

The film franchise is one of the highest grossing franchises in Marvel Studios’ lineup, and Iron Man 4 was probably Marvel’s backup plan should Guardians of the Galaxy have tanked at the box office. Luckily that did not happen, but that still doesn’t mean the studio shouldn’t consider Iron Man 4. But looking at the studios’ success outside the Iron Man franchise, they might not need to look to Downey Jr. to reprise his titular role for a solo film. Hit the jump to see what the actor had to say about the future.
