Last week on Preacher, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) was challenged by those nearest and dearest. After he lost his temper and accidentally sent Eugene (Ian Colletti) to Hell, both Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Tulip (Ruth Negga) tried to reach him in different ways. Usually the fight loving drunkard, Cassidy was calm, rational and for his part, a good friend. In order to convince Jesse to give up Genesis, the force inside him, he revealed the truth about himself. He removed his clothes outside and burst into flames. When Tulip questioned him, Jesse was disgusted that she knew Cass was a vampire and sent her away. Suddenly low on friends, Jesse was in for a fight. Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley), the psychotic head of Quincannon Meat & Packing is gunning for Jesse’s church land. See, Jesse bet his father’s land to Odin if he couldn’t get him to accept God. Despite leaving church a convert, Quincannon was not long for the lord, and quickly committed a mass shooting of his rival business competition. Now he is back to claim the land he feels was verbally dealt to him.

Preacher
Episode 1.7 “He Gone”
Directed by Michael Morris
Written by Mary Laws
Starring Dominic Cooper, Joe Gilgun, Ruth Negga, Lucy Griffiths, W. Earl Brown, Anatol Yusef, Tom Brooke, Ian Colletti, Jackie Earle Haley
AMC
Air date: Sunday, July 10th, 2016, 9pm

Last week on AMC’s Preacher, chaos ensued inside the Sundowner Motel, when angels Fiore (Tom Brooke) and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) confessed to what the power is inside of Jesse (Dominic Cooper). It is Genesis, the unnatural and ungodly spawn of an angel and demon that is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. When a seraphim comes for the being, the motel is turned into an all-out bloodbath. Jesse refuses to surrender Genesis, and figures that this is all part of God’s plan, despite being told straight by two agents of God that it is not. Genesis may be too powerful for Jesse to handle, as shown when Eugene (Ian Colletti) prods him too far about ethics and morals, and is told to go to Hell… you see Genesis takes things way too literally and poor Arseface is juggling the levels of Dante’s Inferno.

Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is feeling the power of God pour out of him. He is using his gift to help those in Annville, mending fences and giving sage advice. After all, if he can make a convert out of Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley), then what can’t he do. Except, it’s not the power of God inside him. We find that out when the two cowboys from Heaven, Fiore (Tom Brooke), and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) reveal it to him after an entire day of dishing out good healing words to townsfolk. We get a taste for what it truly is when Quincannon hosts a meeting with rival company execs and after some proper etiquette and drinks, serves them a death sentence via large semi automatic weapon. In other character news, a strange relationship is brewing between Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Tulip (Ruth Negga).

Last week we learned a bit about the complex relationship involving Preacher Jesse Custer and the head of O, M, & P, Odin Quincannon. Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley) pretty much controls Annville to the point where he was quickly able to “bury” the story of the brothel girl who drowned in a sinkhole on his property. Jesse (Dominic Cooper) realized that the key to rebuilding the church audience was to get the most powerful people in town on board with the word of God, so he got everyone in with a raffle for a flatscreen, and then in front of everyone ordered Quincannon to “Serve God!” Of course, this worked because Jesse has a heavenly force inside him that can be used to command orders. We assume it’s heavenly because two cowboys claiming to be from Heaven are trying to get that force back. Jesse’s friend, the drunken Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) offered to help them, but he was wounded by Tulip (Ruth Negga) in a accidental bout of rage. When she took him to hospital she discovered he slithered off to the blood bank for a snack…

Preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is being pulled in multiple directions. There is Tulip (Ruth Negga), his ex partner and girlfriend who is lustfully trying to persuade him back to his darker urges. There’s Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), the Irish vampire who argues with him over faith and God’s path. There is the town of Annville, Texas, that is in desperate need of salvation. And of course, there is an otherworldly force possessing him that has the power to make people listen to his words… to the letter. Last week, two men came seeking this power, but Cassidy took them out using a chainsaw and the good book… to the head. Interestingly, the two men left very dead by Cass were seen very much alive by the sheriff at the end.

Warning – SPOILERS for Preacher Season 1 Episode 2 “See…

Two weeks ago, Preacher debuted on AMC and introduced the TV audience to Jesse Custer, a Texas Preacher who is trying to carve out of new life and leave a violent one buried in the past. This proves hard for Jesse (Dominic Cooper), as he and mysterious new friend; a vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) beat up an entire bar full of hooligans, including abusive father Donnie (Derek Wilson), who ends up with a graphically broken arm. While Jesse’s past, particularly his ex-girlfriend and partner Tulip (Ruth Negga), are trying to bring him back to the dark side, a strange otherworldly force has inhabited him. This same force has been turning men of god (and Satan) inside out and outside in, all over the world, and seemingly has a home now in Jesse Custer. This force is so powerful, that when Jesse told an annoying congregant to “open his heart” to his mother, the man flew to Florida and ripped his heart out of his chest in the old folks home! Right on cue, two strange men stalking the mysterious force show up in Annville likely to cause trouble.

Full disclosure warning…

I know nothing of the Preacher comics, story arcs, or characters. Thanks to some helpful direction from friends on Facebook, to origin story videos on YouTube, I now have a loose idea of what to expect. Preacher is a series from DC’s/Vertigo comics, written and created by Garth Ennis back in the mid 90s. There were several attempts made to get the comic put to film as early as 1998 with Kevin Smith attached as a producer. After almost 15 years bouncing around studios, then off to HBO, the series was finally greenlit by AMC thanks to the efforts of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who also co-wrote and directed the pilot. If you’re looking for a detailed analysis of all the similarities and differences between the comic and the series, I can’t help you. But I will say when it comes to other comic book interpretations, some of my favorite MCU films were based on comic characters I knew little to nothing about, such as Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Uncle Ben told Peter Parker, “with great power comes great responsibility.” I’m telling you, “with no comic knowledge comes no irrational disappointment.” So onward we go…

Warning – SPOILERS for Preacher Season 1…

Seth Rogen Preacher Parody

Sure, the Preacher TV series on AMC from Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin looks pretty great and we’re all very excited to finally check it out this weekend. But Rogen is still best known for his comedy work, so he made sure to put that to use for a Preacher trailer parody starring…you guessed it, Rogen himself.

The video shows the Rogen parody and then a side-by-side with the original trailer. You can check it out below, along with another recently released video offering a peek at a quick but intense car ride involving Tulip O’Hare (played on the show by Ruth Negga).
