Marvel Studios Have A Plan B For MCU Stories If Character Rights Revert Back To Them

Avengers and X-Men

Because Marvel Studios doesn’t own the rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, or Deadpool, and Fox doesn’t own the rights to any of the Marvel Studio characters, they are not free to use them in any way for their respective films, although Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have a complicated copyright that allows the two characters to appear in a Marvel and Fox films (not played by the same actors of course). Even with that sort of loophole in play, many wonder what would happen should the rights revert back to Marvel. We got a small glimpse of what happens when studios decide to share their characters when Marvel and Sony inked a deal that allowed Spider-Man to appear in the MCU early last year.

However Fox doesn’t seem to be interested in making a similar deal – most likely because the X-Men film franchise is a successful one and they met the Fantastic Four deadline that allows them to keep the property for another few years. But that isn’t stopping Marvel from making contingency plans to fit those characters into the MCU should the rights revert back to them. More on the story below.

Avengers: Infinity War Title Card

The Avengers films bring all the titular heroes plus some of their supporting ones together to take on a threat they couldn’t take care of alone. For the final film it will be broken into two parts Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Part II, which will bring Thanos out of the shadows and into battle against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. There was much speculation as to what could happen after that leading into Phase 4, some surmised that major characters would die and with other heroes taking up the mantle in their place.

Kevin Feige has said that the next films could follow what James Bond has done by replacing the actor but staying within the same universe. While it’s really not clear if these moves will affect all the characters across the board, Feige has now given us some insight as to what will happen after Phase 3.

Captain Marvel Logo

Last night, Marvel and Disney held an event to celebrate the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and producer Jeremy Latchem were on site to help commemorate the moment as well as participate in Q & A where they talked about the film and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Among the many questions that were asked, one was what happened to Captain Marvel. As some of you may know, director Joss Whedon originally wanted to have her and Spider-Man make an appearance in the film – albeit a cameo. It didn’t pan out as Whedon hoped, as Feige opted to tell a fully fleshed out story as a way to introduce the character into the MCU. And now he is talking about what happened. Check out what he had to say below.
