The Avengers films bring all the titular heroes plus some of their supporting ones together to take on a threat they couldn’t take care of alone. For the final film it will be broken into two parts Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Part II, which will bring Thanos out of the shadows and into battle against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. There was much speculation as to what could happen after that leading into Phase 4, some surmised that major characters would die and with other heroes taking up the mantle in their place.
Kevin Feige has said that the next films could follow what James Bond has done by replacing the actor but staying within the same universe. While it’s really not clear if these moves will affect all the characters across the board, Feige has now given us some insight as to what will happen after Phase 3.
Collider was over at Avengers: Age of Ultron home entertainment release event where Marvel Studios President Feige and Marvel Studios exec Jeremy Latcham confirmed that Avengers: Infinity War will mark the end of the Avengers films. But Latcham provided some vague answers that seemed to indicate that the two-part finale will bring an end to the Avengers we currently know:
“I think it definitely is an end to some version of the team that we’ve come to know as The Avengers. Who knows exactly what is going to happen yet in that film, but I think this version of that team””and I think we start to hint at it at the end of Age of Ultron””will be evolving.”
He continued:
“One of the things we love from the comics is that the roster is always changing and new people are coming onto the team, and you can pick up an Avengers book 10 years later and you don’t recognize the people on the cover. But the ideas and ideals and things that make the Avengers the Avengers still exist, and I think that’s part of what this culmination will be. We’re seeing this version of the team doing this thing to save the universe, the galaxy, however you want to put it, and we’ll kind of see where that goes. It’s not the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I think that it is the end of part of it for sure. We’re still trying to sort out that point.”
It will be interesting to see how Marvel moves on with most of the cast’s contracts expiring after Phase 3, especially for those who have signed on during Phase 2 and Phase 3. We know that Chadwick Boseman will appear in at least two Marvel films – Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther – and it goes without saying that he will appear in one or maybe both of the Avengers: Infinity War films, but it is not clear if he will appear in anything beyond that. Same goes for whomever gets cast for Captain Marvel and The Inhumans. Let’s not forget Guardians of the Galaxy, obviously they aren’t finishing their trilogy before Infinity War, but because of the film’s success you can be sure Disney has one planned. How do their contracts get affected by this?
