The Runaways is a little independent film based on the 1970s rock band of the same name that featured Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, and Lita Ford. The movie stars young up-and-coming actresses Dakota Fanning (I Am Sam, Push) as Currie and Kristen Stewart (Panic Room, The Twilight Saga) as Jett. It will first debut next month at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, but it doesn’t need to worry about being picked up by a studio for distribution anymore; that part of the quest is now taken care of. It’s being reported that Bob Berney and Bill Pohlad‘s Apparition Films has officially acquired the rights to the film, and already has plans to release it on March 19, 2010.

The Runaways is directed by relative newcomer Floria Sigismondi, who based the story on Cherie Currie’s book, Neon Angel: the Cherie Currie Story. The movie also stars Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II) as Lita Ford, Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development, Whip It) as Robin, Michael Shannon (Bug, Revolutionary Road) as Kim Fowley, and Tatum O’Neal (Paper Moon, Rescue Me) as Marie Harmon.

It was announced earlier this month that Twilight star Kristen Stewart would be starring as Joan Jett in The Runaways movie, which focuses on Jett’s teenage years as guitarist for the all-girl rock band The Runaways. While the band toured the world, the girls — all underage — were considered “jailbait,” a stigma which interfered with their attempts for mainstream success back in the 1970s.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart has been tapped to play rock queen Joan Jett in The Runaways, a music biopic based Jett’s 1970’s all-girl band.

The film is scheduled to begin production in 2009, but will have to accommodate Stewart’s commitments to the two Twilight sequels, the first of which — New Moon — expected to start shooting in early 2009.

The story will follow Jett and singer Cherie Currie‘s rise to stardom as teenage rock stars in The Runaways and all the debauchery and disillusionment that came with it, which eventually led to their disbanding.

As previously reported, Jett will executive produce, while Floria Sigismondi , who wrote the script based on Currie’s memoirs, will direct. The initial report noted that the script was adapted from Currie’s unpublished memoirs, but the singer did pen an autobiography in the late 1980’s titled Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story, and this film was originally to be titled Neon Angels.
