Woo hoo! That was my gut reaction to seeing Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder #2 was available for review. After having read the first installment of this five-issue miniseries last month, I had been waiting impatiently for this day to come. The only thing that makes this better is that I get the chance to let you know about it, too!

Picking up the morning following the events of issue #1, we watch as Sir Edward Grey conducts a thorough investigation of the area where he was assaulted. Skipping over details that allude to the supernatural, Grey explains the events to local authorities all the while quizzing them about the murder that originally brought him there in the first place. Learning that the victim had last been seen in the company of the local pharmaceutical mogul, he takes his leave to pursue that lead.

One thing you can always count on Dark Horse Comics for is the supernatural and paranormal comics. I say this as a compliment, mind you. And while some are better than others, I am seldom disappointed in anything they publish. Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder #1 is certainly no exception. But this isn’t your average story, it combines an old fashioned mystery with a multitude of surprises.

We begin with the peculiar death of a royal servant. The coroner sees the death as a puzzling anomaly so Sir Edward Grey is sent to make sense from the bizarre symptoms found on the body. One event leads to another and Grey finds himself en route to a small outer-lying town looking for more clues. Suspicious circumstances and the oddities of the townspeople cause him to dig a little deeper than normal. The discovery of a clue and a late night encounter prove that he is on the right path. For many people, a near death experience would have them packing and on the next train out of town. But for a paranormal investigator it just solidifies his resolve to get to the truth at all costs.

So, The Last of Us: American Dreams, is based on a recent hit video game. This has been happening a lot lately. Like, a lot a lot.
It’s also co-written by Neil Druckmann, who is the writer for the aforementioned video game: The Last of Us. He is the creative director for the game and has written for a few other big budget video games. Now, the story lines of video games have come a long way since Doom, or even Quake. In 1998, when Half-Life was released, it was hailed as a landmark in storytelling in an FPS. Since then, the quality of the story has become more central to the quality of game. You know this, I know this, anyone that is even remotely into gaming knows this, and I don’t need to make this a recent history recap. Still, this smacks of a commercial cash-in, and one that serves only to sell a new action figure, or some such, and eke out a few more dollars from the beleaguered masses. Hooray.

But it isn’t. Not really, anyways. Faith Erin Hicks (Friends With Boys), has been gaining popularity for a bit now, and while I wouldn’t say this is the culmination of that, she isn’t Alan Dean Foster, or a similar warm body contracted for a product tie-in. What she and Drukmann have managed to create is a teenage-rebellion story enmeshed in the post-apocalyptic world of a zombie-infection outbreak.

codebreakersBOOM! Studios has been producing some really interesting mini-series lately and we’ve just learned about another intriguing series coming soon.

Codebreakers, written by Carey Malloy with art by Scott Godlewski, promises “clandestine thrills and excitement that only BOOM! can deliver.” There will also be covers by Unthinkable‘s Julian Totino Tedesco and Brett Weldele (The Surrogates).

I’m pretty much on board with anything BOOM! produces so I’ll be picking this one up.

Crack the code with Codebreakers this April, but in the meantime, check out the official press release below.
