This Is 40 Header

There’s a new trailer for the upcoming Judd Apatow comedy This is 40. The film is the sort of sequel to Knocked Up and will follow the characters Pete and Debbie (Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, respectively) as they enter their 40s. Check out the trailer below.

The new trailer doesn’t pack a comedic punch the way the first trailer did. Instead it pushes for the drama aspect of the film as it tries to convey the difficulties most parents and married couples experience when they are approaching their 40s. Trying to balance out a life with kids, a money grubbing father (Albert Brooks), and rekindling a relationship can’t be easy. So I am anxious to see how Apatow is able to balance out the drama with comedy in the film. Plus I just wanted to see more of Pete and Debbie, as they were my favorite characters in Knocked Up.

Knocked Up

The LA Times has a preview of the upcoming Judd Apatow movie, This is 40, which is a spin-off of his 2007 comedy Knocked Up.

The movie focuses on Pete (Paul Rudd), Debbie (Leslie Mann), and their two daughters Sadie (Maude Apatow) and Charlotte (Iris Apatow), who were all at the heart of Knocked Up as Debbie’s little sister Alison (Katherine Heigl) accidentally gets pregnant after a one night stand with Ben (Seth Rogen), a stoner and lovable loser type she met at a club one night.

Blu-Ray Unrated Edition
Directed by Judd Apatow
Starring Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Pall Rudd, Leslie Mann
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Release Date: September 30, 2008

Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) is living the easy responsibility-free life. A court settlement gave him enough money to sit around and get stoned with his housemate for a few years. In contrast, Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl) is an up and coming entertainment reporter working at E! These seemingly polar opposites both go out for a night of fun and end up hooking up for what it seems both intended to be a one-night stand. Too bad Ben didn’t use protection. Alison is pregnant, she’s keeping the baby, and the two decide to see if they are compatible enough try an actual relationship.

Rogen is a funny guy, but I think his Frat Pack cohorts may have put him on center stage too early. Despite its own charms, Knocked Up is not as good as some of the other FP movies out there. It fails to comment on the responsibilities of parenthood in the subtle ways the other films poke fun at social norms, but there is still plenty to find funny. I know I may be in the minority with that opinion, but to me, Knocked Up does not have the same rewatch value as other movies with this group.
