Joaquin Phoenix

The name M. Night Shyamalan is associated with a few things, most notably “twists” and as of late “bad movies.” Well considering his Fox drama Wayward Pines was a critical and commercial success, and The Visit perfectly fits with Blumhouse’s horror films on a frugal budget, the filmmaker has seemingly bounced back from a couple of down years. With The Visit completely finished, the film has been making the early screening rounds and has been met with rave reviews. As such, Shyamalan is eager to get back to work, once again with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions for another horror film on a frugal budget.

This time he would be reuniting with an actor who he has worked with a couple of times in the past. According to new reports, Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to reunite with Shyamalan for an all new horror flick. More on this story below.

The whole season has hinged on one simple question; what is Wayward Pines? The all-too-perfect small Idaho town is full of surveillance, and the occasional “reckoning” of its dissidents. It’s protected by an electrified fence which keeps its citizens trapped or secure, depending on your point of view. The truth revealed is Wayward Pines is the last vestige of humanity, and it’s actually the year 4028. Humans were mutated into Abbies (monstrous vampire looking creatures) and David Pilcher (Toby Jones) recruited followers to join his “ark,” and were kept alive through cryogenics. When Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) refuses to follow orders and execute Kate (Carla Gugino), he instead tells the whole town the truth about Pilcher, the surveillance, and the Abbies. Pilcher sees the writing on the wall for his town, and shuts down to power to everything, including the fences.

Fox’s new 10-episode series, Wayward Pines, debuted last week with a star-studded cast and a plot taken from the dark nightmares of X-Files and LOST. Based on a series of novels by Blake Crouch, the story centers on Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) who awakes from a car accident in the tiny Idaho town of Wayward Pines. He and his partner were to investigate the disappearance of two agents there. What he finds instead are a strange array of characters, who all seem to be lying or hiding something. A nurse (Melissa Leo) at the hospital won’t let him leave. The sheriff (Terrence Howard) is anything but helpful. The one nice person he finds is bartender Beverly (Juliette Lewis) who slips him an address where he finds one of the agents dead and decaying. Unable to reach his office or wife, Burke is quickly losing it. It only gets worse when he finds his former partner Kate (Carla Gugino) who claims to have been lost in Wayward Pines for years!
