“Where shopping can cost you an arm and a leg.”

Exploitation filmmaker Jim Wynorski has given us so many classic films. The Return of Swamp Thing, Scream Queen Hot Tub Party, 976-Evil II, Ghoulies IV, Sorceress, The Bare Wench Project, The Witches of Breastwick, Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre – the list goes on and on. Of the 100+ movies the writer-director has made, however, his finest accomplishment is 1986’s Chopping Mall.

Starring Kelli Maroney (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Night of the Comet) and Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond), Chopping Mall is the epic story of eight teenagers trapped in a state-of-the-art shopping mall, pursued by homicidal security droids, also known as Killbots. As the robots pick off the frisky teenagers with their high-powered lasers, the survivors break into a sporting goods store (“Peckinpah’s”) to secure weapons. Armed with rifles, propane tanks, and golf carts, the denim-clad kids wage war on the murder-bots with Park Plaza Mall serving as their battlefield.

Dick Miller is the last of the great American character actors. Whether sharing the screen with Nicholson, Hanks, Schwarzenegger, or The Ramones, Dick has been stealing scenes since his screen debut in 1955.

Miller has worked with some of the great directors: Scorsese, Corman, Dante, Cameron, Demme, and more. If you’re an avid moviegoer, you definitely know his face, but few know his name and even fewer know his story: an aspiring writer turned accidental actor.

Directed by Elijah Drenner, That Guy Dick Miller documents Miller’s funny and unexpected story, featuring interviews from the directors, producers, co-stars, and friends who have helped make him Hollywood’s leading “that guy.”

Theatrical Release: November 16, 1984

The return of a comet which has not passed Earth in 65 million years is the cause of celebration in the streets to witness the event as the planet passes through the comet’s tail. But as dawn rises on Los Angeles, sisters Regina (Catherine Mary Stewart) and Samantha (Kelli Maroney) discover that the comet’s tail has literally vaporized almost the entire human population. And those that were exposed to the comet but lived have been mutated into zombies who require uncontaminated human blood in order to keep living.

Now, Regina and Samantha, who are learning to adapt to the apocalypse via the one thing valley girls do best – heading to the mall for a shopping spree – must avoid zombies, armed gangs of stock boys and a team of scientists who survived via an underground bunker if they expect to live another night!

Night of the Comet makes its Blu-ray debut here and brings with it all the nostalgic glory the cult favorite has to offer. The movie, originally released in 1984, is a hodgepodge of light science-fiction and horror heavily sprinkled with charming comedy-stylings. Think Fast Times at Ridgemont High paired up with The Omega Man.

DVD Review: ‘The House Of The Devil’

The House of the Devil DVDThe House of the Devil
Directed by Ti West
Starring Jocelin Donahue, Greta Gerwig, Tom Noonan, Mary Woronov, AJ Bowen, Dee Wallace
Dark Sky Films
Release Date: February 2, 2010

When entering into The House of the Devil, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had heard some good things about it in passing, but it was one of those movies where I didn’t read one review. Even more rare an occurrence for me personally, I hadn’t even seen one single trailer for the film, making it an almost completely natural movie-watching experience. And when it was all said and done, I must admit: I might just start approaching all movies with this complete lack of prior knowledge, because it paid off big time.

The House of the Devil tells the story of an average young college girl named Sam (Jocelin Donahue) who’s in an average college girl section of her life. When she lands a new place to live and get her out of her terrible dorm living situation, it’s great news for her; but it also creates bills that she doesn’t exactly have the money for.

When she notices a job posted on a bulletin board looking for babysitters, it’s the perfect answer to some immediate income, and the cushion of a couple of months to get situated and find a much better income solution. Sadly, the job doesn’t appear to play out as she had hoped, and the stress begins to really set in. But like a blessing from above (or a curse from below), the family seeking a babysitter contacts her again in desperate need of her services. Something feels off, but she reluctantly accepts with simply no other options available to her, and has her best friend Megan (Greta Gerwig) give her a ride there to make sure everything is legit.

As always, click over for a lot more and to watch a trailer for the movie!
