Gigantic First-Look

Back in 2015 Disney announced a new animated project titled Gigantic. The movie was to be based on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale, and had Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Captain Marvel writer Meg LeFauve and Nathan Greno (Tangled) attached to direct. It even had a 2020 release date locked in.

But while Disney has a strong track record of releasing hit movies, sometimes the things they’re developing don’t work out the way they hoped. And with that, sadly, it’s been revealed that Disney has decided to shut down development on Gigantic.

3D Blu-ray | Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Byron Howard, Nathan Greno
Starring Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Release date: March 29, 2011

With their 50th animated feature, Disney tackles the classic fairy tale Rapunzel, bringing to life the story of the young girl with golden tresses locked away high up in a tower, out of reach from the outside world.

In Tangled, the opening sequence gives us Rapunzel’s history: stolen from her King and Queen parents as a newborn by an wicked old woman named Gothel (Donna Murphy), Rapunzel’s long blonde hair holds the power to restore youth, hence why the witch keeps the princess captive. The girl, not knowing her true origin, lives her life in a high tower with no doors, with no friends or interaction with the outside world. Each day, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) lets down her 70-feet of hair through the window for Mother Gothel to climb up. Just before her 18th birthday, the teen has just one wish: to go see the floating lanterns that are lit each year on her birthday, but Gothel has no intention of letting the girl leave “home.”

TANGLED

Tangled is what many of us thought would be one of Disney’s smaller films, almost a direct-to-DVD movie that found itself in theaters, yet something about the animated feature put butts in seats. Globally, Tangled brought in over $350 million. When you actually take time to watch the film, you’ll see it tells a great, if traditional, Disney story with solid performances from the lead voice actors Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. Geeks of Doom recently took part in a roundtable discussion with Tangled‘s directors, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, to talk about film, which arrives on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday, and the duo shared some great nuggets of information from behind the scenes of the making of the movie.

Tangled was originally simply titled Rapunzel. Early on the film’s titled was changed to the much more modern Tangled. Byron Howard commented, “When Nathan and I figured out that this film was really about two characters, Flynn and Rapunzel, we knew that changing the title would be a good idea. We like that Tangled as a title sounds smart and intriguing, while also relating to the tangle of plot, characters and emotion in the film.” One of the best things that Tangled does is tell a classic Disney animated film story, but with a modern more approach to the style and characters. There’s edginess to Rapunzel’s mother that is hilarious and clever all the way down to her Oscar-nominated song.
