Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley Confirmed For New ‘Alien’; Will Be “Genetic Sibling” To First Two Films

When looking at the entire film catalog of the Alien franchise, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are the weakest of the four. So Neill Blomkamp hopes that his new Alien film will be something that can disregard those final two films, and be a proper installment by acting as a “genetic sibling” to the first two movies.
Blomkamp amazed us all with the concept art that he released via Instagram, and the District 9 director then revealed that he could make the movie if he wanted to before it was eventually confirmed that he would indeed helm a brand new Alien film next. But it wasn’t clear whether Sigourney Weaver‘s Ripley character would be involved or not.
While making the press rounds for Chappie, Blomkamp and film star Weaver talked about the new Alien and confirmed that the movie would feature Ripley after all, acting as closure to her story. Hit the jump for more and to see a video of the two talking about the movie.

Sigourney Weaver Talks New ‘Alien’ Film With Jimmy Fallon (Video)

News broke on Wednesday that Neill Blomkamp will be directing a new Alien movie, a project he teased last month with concept art. After fans of the Alien film franchise responded very favorably to the director’s vision, Blomkamp revealed that Fox would make the film with him, but that he was the actual hold-out for it.
Later that night after the news broke that the District 9 director was officially on board for a new Alien movie, Sigourney Weaver appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in an episode that was recorded earlier that day. But, knowing the history of the project, host Jimmy Fallon did bring up the subject of a new Alien movie during the interview with the star, who was promoting her new film, Chappie, which was directed by Blomkamp.

Neill Blomkamp Officially Directing ‘Alien’ Movie Next
The internet caught fire when District 9 and Elysium, and director Neill Blomkamp shared some concept art for a movie set in Ridley Scott‘s 1979 classic Alien universe, leading many to think he was, or at one point had been, working on a new movie in the franchise.
More recently he confirmed that he’s always wanted to make an Alien movie, and when there was some down time during post production on his latest movie, Chappie, he began working on the concept art, inspired in part by one of his Chappie stars and original Alien bad-ass Sigourney Weaver. Even more surprising, he revealed that if he wanted to make the movie, he could.
Now it appears, believe it or not, that that’s exactly what Blomkamp is planning to do for his next project.

Neill Blomkamp Says He Can Make ‘Alien’ Movie If He Wants To
Early last month some amazing concept art was released by director Neill Blomkamp, whose movies include District 9, Elysium, and the upcoming Chappie.
The concept art was for a new movie in the Alien series that Blomkamp was developing once upon a time, but was apparently not working on anymore, depressing as that was for the many fans of the movies who reacting with overwhelming positivity to the images.
While Blomkamp might not be actively developing a new Alien movie right this very moment, it turns out that the possibility of the movie becoming a reality is not as out of the question as it was once thought to be.
