D23 Expo 2019: ‘Mulan’ Promises To Be A Large-Scale Live-Action Epic With A Touch Of Disney Magic

Mulan is considered to be one of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ crown jewels and given Disney’s success with their live-action adaptations of their animated classics, it only makes sense that they look towards turning 1998’s Mulan into a live-action film. However, instead of following in the footsteps of other films that merely retell the original story, like Cinderella and Beauty and The Beast, Mulan will be depicted as a large-scale epic that sees the titular character (played by Liu Yifei) do anything to protect the family that she loves, even if it means disguising herself as a man so that her ailing father does not have to go to war.
Check out our coverage of the film from this weekend’s D23 Expo here below.

‘Mulan’ Trailer: Disney’s Latest Live-Action Effort Promises To Be An Epic Tale

Disney’s Mulan remains one of their best animated features during their renaissance. Based on a Chinese folktale, the animated film followed a young female who disguised herself as a male soldier in order to join the army so that her ailing father would not have to go.
Now with Disney turning their animated classics into live-action films, it was only a matter of time before they looked to Mulan.
Directed by Niki Caro, the live-action version stars Yifei Liu as the title star who will defend the honor of her family and become one of the most noble soldiers in the Chinese army. Check out the trailer here below.

‘Mulan’ Director Confirms Live-Action Film Will Not Be A Musical And Why That Is Okay

Beauty and The Beast singlehandedly won the box office over last weekend with a record-setting $170 million. It’s not like this is the first time that the studio has found success in adapting their animated classics, nor will it be the last. They are already developing live-action adaptations of Dumbo, Aladdin, Sword in the Stone, and even Winnie The Pooh. But the one adaptation that seems to be getting a lot more attention, the wrong kind, is Mulan.

‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’ Trailer: Jessica Chastain Creates A Secret Sanctuary In Nazi-Occupied Poland

Looking at the first trailer for The Zookeeper’s Wife, one might assume that film was getting ready for the awards’ season. In truth, it’s going to be released months after the awards season has ended. But that shouldn’t take away from the message of the film, especially now.
That’s because the film is based on the true story of Antonina Zabinska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) who with her family cares for Zoo animals in 1939 Poland. When the country is invaded by Nazis, she takes it upon herself to hide Jews and smuggle them out of the country, which in turn puts her and her entire family at risk. Check out the full trailer below.

‘Captain Marvel’ Director Shortlist Reveals Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and More

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige revealed that Brie Larson was confirmed to play the title role of Captain Marvel. At the time, the film, written by Meg LaFavue and Nicole Perlman, didn’t have a director, but there was a sense that the origins film would be a “reinvention” in order to avoid any comparisons to Green Lantern. Now it looks like Marvel is closing in on a director.
According to new reports, they have set their sights on Niki Caro (Whale Rider, MacFarland, USA), Lesli Linka Glatter (TV’s Mad Men), and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World). Check more on the story below.
