Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 6. Scott Pilgrims Finest HourScott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour
Scott Pilgrim: Volume 6
Written and Drawn by Byran Lee O’Malley
Oni Press
Release date: July 20, 2010

This sixth book in the series has already been out for a while now, but with the movie version of Scott Pilgrim out on DVD now, we’re back to take a look at the final volume in the comic book series. I’m happy to say that Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour is very good, and it brings the series to a close in a very satisfying way. Yes, this is a great series that you owe it to yourself to read if you haven’t yet. It’s a modern classic that will hopefully get a whole new generation excited about comics.

Here is your official spoiler warning: I will be discussing events that happen not only in this volume, but any other volume in the series that I feel the need to reference. If you have not read Scott Pilgrim before, know that this is a very good series with a sense of humor deeply immersed in video game and music, but at its soul it is the story of two young people trying to make the switch from youthful lust into an adult relationship. The art borrows a lot from manga but is distinctly its own, and part of the joy is seeing writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley style evolve and mature over the course of all six volumes. It is very, very good and well worth your time and money. Okay, for the rest of you who have read the series, here are my thoughts.

Scott Pilgrim Toronto Launch PartyIt was on like Donkey Kong on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 as Scott Pilgrim made his triumphant return to the streets of Toronto! The midnight release of Scott Pilgrim Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour held at the Beguiling at Markham and Bloor jammed a city block full of Ramona Flowers, Young Neils, The Evil Ex-Boyfriends, and of course, Scott Pilgrim himself!

With a dash of a book signing, a smattering of street festival, and a generous handful of comic book convention, the Midnight Release Party (organized totally over Facebook) for Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour was attended by well over 300 people and featured costume contests, prizes, and the man of the hour himself, Bryan Lee O’Malley, signing the sixth and final edition of his wildly popular Toronto-based comic book.

Check out images I took from the event here below.

A cult phenomenon since its launch in 2004, the graphic novel series combines hipster pop culture references, manga-influenced art, and the feel of a classic video game to tell the story of Scott Pilgrim, a 20-something bassist in Toronto, ON who must battle the Seven Evil Ex-Boyfriends to win the love of indie-nerd beauty queen Ramona Flowers.

Six years, five volumes, and 1,000 pages. Oni Press and Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s modern day classic, Scott Pilgrim will be coming to a close right before the release of the film this August. On Tuesday, July 20, 2010, comic shops and bookstores across North America will celebrate the release of Scott Pilgrim Vol. 6: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour!

O’Malley spoke briefly about the long anticipated finale:

“It’s been quite a ride, and I couldn’t have gotten here without the support of the fans and the retailers. It feels great to be in the home stretch, and I think this is going to be the best Scott Pilgrim book ever!”

Greg Rucka

November 29th is author Greg Rucka‘s birthday, so naturally, we here at Geeks of Doom, with grateful assistance from InStockTrades, are celebrating with Greg Rucka Week! Five Days. Five Reviews of some of his best work! To cover all he has done would be insane, and much of his work — like 52 and No Man’s Land – is not his alone. But we’ll do the best we can, and we hope you enjoy.

And there is no better way to start out a week of reviews dedicated to Greg Rucka then to focus on the perennial favorite, Queen & Country.
