Robot and Frank

The last time I saw such wonderful chemistry between a human and a robot was Duncan Jones’ Moon. While Frank and Robot doesn’t possess the same dark tones that Moon had, it does have a lighter and more whimsy look at the relationship between man and machine. Since the film was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, I have been waiting to see some form of footage from it. Now, Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the first trailer for the film, which you can check out below.

Based on the reviews I have read and the trailer that I just saw, Robot and Frank has a lot of heart, and there is just enough tomfoolery in the film to keep me interested. In it Frank, an aging jewel thief, is given a robot caretaker. When he finds a reason to take up the crime he retired from, he trains his robot caretaker in the craft of stealing jewels.

Release date: October 14, 2011

In the interest of full disclosure, let the record show the following: I am a HUGE fan of not only the Green Lantern mythology, but particularly of Hal Jordan. There is something about his character that has stuck with me through the years, and after it was announced, you couldn’t get me to shut up about Green Lantern. Every time new casting announcements were made, or new footage was released, I would be glued to my iPhone/laptop. This was my most hotly anticipated film of the year by far, and while it may not have been all that it could have been, I really liked Green Lantern.

Spoiler Talk: Green Lantern

Week of Geek: Green Lantern

As far as mindless summer diversions go, Green Lantern isn’t that bad.

Had to pause before writing anything else because “isn’t that bad” is about as enthusiastic there is to get about Green Lantern. It’s a satisfactorily entertaining adaptation and one of the few movies whose FX are actually worth the gouge in price for a 3D viewing. In a world where 3D-ocrity rules, the visuals are such that it almost makes up for the substandard, bordering on generic, origin story. The most acutely negative thing I can write about the Green Lantern experience is that X-Men: First Class and Thor were released before it, perhaps setting the bar too high so that “adequate” is merely…adequate. At least you won’t be wondering why you bothered to pay for those worthless 3D glasses.

Time for some SPOILER TALK! Below are SPOILERS for Green Lantern. Feel free to add your thoughts in the Comments section.
