Ouija Board

Yes, you read that correctly: after finding a way to trim around $95 million from its projected budget, Universal Pictures is once again ready to make a movie based on Hasbro’s popular otherworldly communication device, the Ouija board.

Universal made a huge deal with Hasbro a while back that would see them turning many toys and board games into movies, but due to exceedingly large budgets the studio ultimately decided to shelf multiple projects including Ouija, which would have cost them an estimated $100 million to make. At the time of their deal, there was a stipulation that Universal would have to pay a $5 million penalty for not meeting certain deadlines…but now times have changed a bit.

According to sources the studio has done a little rearranging, and now, with a planned budget of around the same $5 million that was once a simple contract stipulation, the Ouija movie is back on.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

It’s been almost two years since we reported that Michael Bay would be partnering with Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon to produce a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie through his Platinum Dunes production company and that Iron Man scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway would be writing the screenplay with an eye towards turning the movie into a franchise.

Now comes the news that Jonathan Liebesman, the director of last year’s Battle: Los Angeles and the upcoming Wrath of the Titans, is in talks to direct the reboot.

Ouija Board

Universal is dump–happy lately, dropping numerous projects that they had been developing for multiple years.

First was the Guillermo del Toro–directed H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, At the Mountains of Madness, which was followed by Ron Howard’s The Dark Tower, the insanely big three–film and two–season TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s book series of the same name. The studio also dumped two of its Hasbro board game movie projects not too long ago in Clue, which is being developed by Gore Verbinski, and Monopoly, which was being set up with Ridley Scott attached as a potential director.

Now comes word that Universal has dropped yet another Hasbro board game project, Ouija, based of course on the popular game where kids pretend they can communicate with the dead.

There could be a lot of potentially great news here for fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Last we heard about the project, it had acquired the services of Michael Bay‘s Platinum Dunes — makers of horror remakes like Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and A Nightmare on Elm Street — to produce the new live-action/computer animated flick.

That announcement was a few months ago, and next up comes the reveal of writers for the project. Reports are that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have reached a near $1 million deal to craft the new Ninja Turtles script.
