Persia

The Huffington Post has a couple of new images of star Jake Gyllenhaal in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced video game adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

In the movie, Gyllenhaal plays Dastan, a prince who is tricked into unleashing the Sands of Time, which destroy his kingdom and turn its people into vicious demons. In order to amend his mistake and stop an evil ruler from allowing the Sands to destroy the world, he teams up with a rival princess (and natural love interest) named Tamina, played by Gemma Arterton. The movie also stars Ben Kingsley as Nizam and Alfred Molina as Sheik Amar.

I’m not sure what to think of these images. I know he’s a prince and all, and I’ve only played one of the games — but does Jake look maybe a little too… pretty? This could just be me, but I definitely expected more of a rugged, warrior-type in the final product and not the same thing we saw on those set pics a while back (Read: First Look: Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Prince Of Persia’). Actually, looking back at them now, he has a lot more of that rugged look in those than he does in these new official images. Weird.

Click over for the images.

The Doom Dispatch: Payne vs. Payne: Great Games, Terrible Movies

Doom Dispatch

Adapting video games into films should not be this hard. Books and plays are turned into good movies on a nearly monthly basis. Christ, even direction is a form of adaptation. The director has both the right and the necessity to cherry-pick and omit from a written screenplay. There is no such thing as “an original film.”

And yet, like trying to pole-vault without an actual pole, the evolutionary link between video game and film has yet to be cleared.

Now to be fair, I liked Silent Hill. It was an atmosphere engine which would have been a whole lot better if an actual script was used.

And as I may have unwisely mentioned in my review of Max Payne at filmarcade.net a week ago, I liked the Doom movie. Don’t blame me… The game came out when I was eight… We were on an anti-poverty board in Chicago together… The parties were hosted by the Annenbergs… SHUT UP!

But other than those, we have been treated to miserable failure after miserable failure. Super Mario Bros., both Tomb Raider films, anything with Uwe Boll’s name on it, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter. They all suck. Granted, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within came close to succeeding, but it failed to adhere to the spirit of the games. Namely, there were no she-dudes, giant chickens, or EEEEEEEENDLLEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS levelling-up.

‘Prince Of Persia’ Possibly Like ‘Pirates’?

Prince of PersiaIf you’re a prospective mega-franchise based on an extremely popular video game series like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is, what do you look up to?

That’s right, Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Pirates franchise made billions of dollars and it made a hobby of shattering box office records, making it the natural inspiration.

When screenwriter/creator Jordon Mechner spoke to MTV, he explained how he pitched the idea to Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

As an old-fashioned swashbuckling action-adventure in a tradition going all the way back to the Doug Fairbanks movies. The modern equivalent being “˜Pirates of the Caribbean,’ an example of an old movie made new again, doing a fresh take on it for a modern audience. Tonally, I’d say it’s basically “˜Pirates of the Caribbean’ with maybe a half-step towards “˜Gladiator.’

Prince of PersiaJust Jared has the very first pics of Jake Gyllenhaal in full-costume for his upcoming franchise bid with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Not a whole lot to see here, but if you’re a fan of the games then you’ll notice that the costume looks pretty good, if you ask me. He still doesn’t look very Persian, but better than I expected for sure!

The pics, which were snapped on the set of the film in Morocco, are obviously not official in nature, but are the only ones out there at this time. In some of them, you can see Gyllenhaal walking hand-in-hand with his girlfriend, actress Reese Witherspoon.
