Riddick Header

Riddick was one of 2013’s most entertaining and satisfying genre movies for many reasons, the most important being that it brought Vin Diesel‘s favorite character back to his darker, more violent roots in gloriously bloody R-rated style. I loved it on first viewing and on the second it just seemed to improve a bit in spite of its flaws.

The movie is hitting Blu-ray in a few weeks and among the extras are an extended director’s cut with eight minutes of additional footage, several behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the motion comic, Riddick: Blindsided, which acts as prequel of sorts to the film.

Blindsided was released online over the summer prior to Riddick‘s theatrical release. You can watch it here below.

Normally, an actor would like to be paid handsomely for a small cameo role in a film, but not Vin Diesel. Instead of receiving a check, the actor received something that was closer to his heart and much more valuable: the rights to his character Riddick. Diesel talked about the trade during the Riddick film premiere in L.A.

In 2006, when Universal was looking to give the Fast & Furious franchise a recharged, they wanted to bring back the face of the franchise to ensure that fans would return for more – four more if you’re keeping count. So when the studio asked Diesel to appear in a cameo role in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift; the actor agreed, but instead of being given a check, the actor acquired the rights to Riddick.

SDCC 2013: Riddick panel banner

With the third film in the Riddick series, simply titled Riddick this time, set to launch in a few months, attendees at San Diego Comic-Con got an advance look today at the upcoming sci-fi/action epic. On the panel to talk about the film was writer/director David Twohy, and actors Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious series), and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica).

A new restricted trailer was shown during the panel, which is now online. Watch it here below.

Twohy started off by talking about coming to Comic-Con years ago when Pitch Black first came out and how excited he was for the new movie. Katie Sackhoff was the first of the actors to come out followed by Vin Diesel and each had clips that showed off their character.

‘Riddick’ Trailer: Only One Can Rule The Dark

Riddick Header

The first trailer for Riddick was more concerned with announcing the return of the titular character than the actual story. From that one trailer alone, it looked like Riddick (Vin Disel) was banished to a desolate planet and thought to live his life on it in solitude. Little did he know that a band of bounty hunters was out for his head.

Now, a new trailer sheds light on that aspect. Watch the trailer here below.

The synopsis provides a little more in depth details as to how these bounty hunters come across the man who can see in the dark. Riddick, in a desperate act of survival, activates an emergency beacon that finds its way into the hands of nefarious bounty hunters. But this is Riddick we are talking about, and the man isn’t about to go down without a fight.
