Napoleon

Stanley Kubrick was and always shall be one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of the moving image. Over the course of a forty-six-year career in directing he made thirteen films, many of them timeless classics and a few undisputed masterpieces that not only influenced generations of filmmakers to come but also forever changed the way films are made and regarded.

Kubrick was a master whose legacy in cinema will endure forever in the continuing impact his films have on the moviegoers who discover them and the directors who studied his works and used the lessons they learned to shape their own careers, including Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Michael Mann, Wes Anderson, Lars Von Trier, and of course Steven Spielberg.

The Shining Image (1980)

The world of cinema has not been the same since Stanley Kubrick died in March 1999, several months before the theatrical release of what turned out to be his final film, Eyes Wide Shut. There is no denying that Kubrick’s passing left many a devoted follower of his work in total shock, but the legacy of classic films the director left behind helped them to deal with the loss very well.

One of Kubrick’s most popular movies was his 1980 Stephen King adaptation The Shining and since its release more than three decades ago, the film has been widely hailed as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. It has inspired countless parodies, most memorably being the segment “The Shinning” in the “Treehouse of Horror V” episode of The Simpsons, and documentaries devoted to playfully deconstructing the minutiae of the director’s meticulously crafted vision of terror and isolation in a snowbound Colorado hotel. The box office success of The Shining cemented Kubrick’s reputation as a master filmmaker who could work in practically any genre with amazing results and further established lead actor Jack Nicholson as one of the most unconventional and watchable movie stars in show business and worth every dollar of his generous salary.

Fear and Desire

When filmmaker Stanley Kubrick died in March 1999 a giant had passed from this mortal coil. Kubrick left behind an incredible body of work, and the majority of his films are regarded as classic, groundbreaking works of cinema. Nearly all of his filmography is available on DVD and Blu-ray, with one glaring exception: Fear and Desire, Kubrick’s 1953 directorial debut.

The movie tells the tale of a squad of soldiers who must make their way through enemy territory to rejoin their unit. Along the way they capture a young peasant girl (Virginia Leith) and tie her to a tree. She is subsequently tormented by a mentally unbalanced soldier played by future filmmaker Paul Mazursky. The squad soon determines the location of an enemy base and embark on a dangerous mission to kill its commanding officer.

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick‘s classic 1980 adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel The Shining was probably the last great horror film of the decade that gave us such timeless scare fests as The Exorcist, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Carrie, and Halloween. Though the snobbish cinemaphiles are reluctant to group The Shining in with the director’s other masterworks of the silver screen the movie has endured and grown in popularity over the past three decades. It is now regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made.

An 80-second video collage of every zoom shot from The Shining has been assembled by Ian Kammer. You can watch it here below.
