The MuppetsThe Muppets
Directed by James Bodin
Starring Jason Segel, Chris Cooper, Amy Adams, John Henson
Release Date: November 23, 2011

So, let me start this review by saying I wasn’t the hugest fan of The Muppets characters when I was growing up and I’ve never cared for musicals. Even today I have a healthy respect for the fandom and appreciate the iconic nature of Jim Henson’s creations, but am still not what I’d call a fan of the franchise. So with these caveats in mind I may actually be the perfect person to review this film, simply titled The Muppets, or the absolute wrong person.

I sort of stand in parallel to Jason Segel, the star of the film and co-writer. He’s the person really responsible for making the film happen. He fought to be involved with the project and fought to get the movie made, all because he loves the characters so much. Segel is an actor having starred in such films as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man, but his true talent may be as a writer. He wrote Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a film that ended up being much better than it should have been.

I remembered reading collections of Muppets comic strips as a kid, and this Muppet Show Comic Book series is very much in the vein of those past comics.

The story begins with Statler and Waldorf, the hecklers from the balcony, playing a game of chess with pieces resembling the Muppets. They talk of introducing a new character into the equation. Actually, it’s more of a new/old character. This character was on the Muppet Babies series, but to my knowledge had never appeared as a grownup until now. I don’t want to give away the name of the character, but it was interesting. It was very fun to see this character as an adult Muppet, and it was also cool to see a bridge between the Muppet Babies cartoon and the comics. I had always thought of the cartoon and the Muppet Show as existing in the same universe, and this issue verified that.

The Muppet Show Comic Book #3 wraps up the “On The Road” storyline that covers the first few issues of this ongoing series. After being on the road to raise money to save their theater, Kermit and the Gang quickly get back to work on giving the audience a great show.

But what’s this? Fozzy and Gonzo have not made it back in the time for the night’s performance! Will they make it in time? And what is in this mysterious box addressed to Fozzy Bear? All these questions and more are answered in issue #3!

The Muppet Show Comic Book series has really done a fantastic job of adapting the old series into comic book format with new stories. The format is basically that of the television show in that it gives you different skits and sub stories to accent the main plot, and the clever writing and humor laced throughout the book really accentuates the quirky style that the Muppets have always been able to achieve.

When news came down the pipe that Boom! Studios was creating a line of child-friendly comics off some licensed properties, I was pretty surprised. I mean, it is tough enough for a smaller publisher to publish non superhero-centric books in this current market, let alone comics geared towards kids. It has the terms “no good deed goes unpunished” and “shoot yourself in the foot” written all over it. But, leave it to the crafty publisher to bring out several quality properties that not only have massive kids appeal, but also mainstream appeal such as The Muppet Show.

Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzy, and the rest of the Muppets are back in comic form once again. Following the pattern of the original variety show, readers are treated with an actual Muppet Show as seen on TV, filled with musical numbers, skits, and backstage shenanigans that you come to know and love. While the show is in session, readers are given a main story to follow that spotlights one member of the Muppet clan. So with any given issue, the focus is on a different Muppet and their story.
