Smurf in Pixels

A new trailer has been released for Pixels, the upcoming movie about an alien race that uses our own classic arcade video games to attack Earth. You can check out the first trailer right here if you missed it.

The movie is directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), and stars Adam Sandler (Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore), Kevin James (Here Comes the Boom, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, The Station Agent), who’s basically playing Billy Mitchell from King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Josh Gad (Frozen, Wish I Was Here), Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars, Spring Breakers), and Brian Cox (Braveheart, Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

You can check out the trailer, which includes James offing a Smurf, below.

Pixels By Patrick Jean

Back in 2010 a very cool little animated short by French filmmaker Patrick Jean titled Pixels took the ‘net by storm. In it, a variety of classic arcade games invade New York City.

Not long after that came word that Adam Sandler‘s Happy Madison had acquired the rights to develop a feature-length adaptation of the short, and that Tim Herlihy would be writing the screenplay.

Now comes word that Sandler himself will star in the movie, and it looks like he’ll be joined by at least one old friend as Grown Ups co-star Kevin James and Josh Gad (Frozen) have entered into negotiations to star as well.

Back in May it was reported that Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions had acquired the rights to make a feature-length film based on Pixels, the wildfire viral video from director Patrick Jean that took the world by storm earlier this year (Read: Atari Apocalypse: ‘Donkey Kong’ & Other Classic Arcade Games Invade New York In ‘Pixels’).

Sandler’s company isn’t waiting around to get things moving, having now hired longtime friend and writer Tim Herlihy to pen the script for the movie. Herlihy started writing for Saturday Night Live while Sandler was still a cast member, and the two went on to work with each other many more times. Titles that Herlihy helped write for Sandler include Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, Little Nicky, and Mr. Deeds.

The short video for which the movie will be based showed a world where classic arcade game characters and elements come to life and wreak havoc on the city. In Happy Madison’s feature, it’s said that they want to take a Ghostbusters action/comedy approach to their take.

If you haven’t seen Pixels yet, you can click over to the other side now to get an idea of what to expect from Happy Madision’s adaptation.
