Orgrim Doomhammer: World of Warcraft film 01

Though Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures has a five-year deal, the recent developments now being reported are starting to look like there is a huge strain between the two. First Universal passed on Kong: Skull Island, allowing Legendary to move the film, budgeted at $125 million, to Warner Bros., which now allows them to build a shared universe opening the door for a Godzilla vs. King Kong film. Then reports of Pacific Rim 2 being put on hold indefinitely broke, and it’s unclear if the studio wants to move forward with the sequel.

But it isn’t just these movies that are causing a strain between Universal and Legendary. Studio politics and a few films performing below box office expectations are contributing to some concerns over films like Warcraft. More on this story below.

Simon Kinberg Is “Really Focused” On Getting ‘Fantastic Four’ Sequel Off The Ground

The Fantastic Four Michael B Jordan Human Torch with Simon Kinberg

Fox being limited to two Marvel properties doesn’t give them much room to play around with as opposed to their competitors Marvel Studios. Unless they can map out their cinematic universe or make a deal like Sony did with Marvel, then Fox is relegated to using just the Fantastic Four and X-Men properties. The former had a reboot recently, which just tanked at the box office and was panned by critics and audiences alike. Then, Fantastic Four‘s director Josh Trank came out a day before the film’s release criticizing Fox for their interference and claiming the studio prevented everyone from seeing his vision of the film. Days later, numerous production problems were revealed, and that Trank tried to control what the cast would say during the film’s press junket. Even a major scene that was shown in trailers was omitted from the final cut.

With Fantastic Four earning a bad reputation and low grossing box office numbers, it was almost certain that there was going to be no sequel. But leave it to Simon Kinberg to hold on hope. While helping promote The Martian at the Toronto International Film Festival, the producer talked about being “really focused” on making a “second one.” More on the possibility of Fantastic Four 2 in the story below.

Thing in Fantastic Four (2015)

This might sound like a severe understatement, but 20th Century Fox’s contractually obligated Fantastic Four reboot is not really performing to the expectations of anyone except perhaps those of us who have followed its troubled development for years and viewed the underwhelming trailers.

The studio’s latest attempt to launch their other major Marvel Comics property as a sequel-ready franchise to rival their X-Men series has been slaughtered by critics, pilloried by audiences, and right now, nothing short of the news that Fox has entered negotiations with Marvel Studios to retake ownership of the First Family of the House of Ideas’ cinematic destiny will satisfy the Fantastic Four’s furiously frothing fan base.

The Fantastic Four movie 2015 Miles Teller as Reed Richards Mr. Fantastic

There is no hiding the fact that Fantastic Four did not meet anyone’s expectations, unless those expectations were failing ones. Fox stands to lose up to $60 million dollars due to its underwhelming $26.2 million dollar debut, and things could get worse if they continue to progress the way they are now.

Because of director Josh Trank‘s volatile and revealing tweet, we were shown the ugly side of studio interference. But it’s not as though Trank is without blame. Throughout the production of the film, the filmmaker has been hostile to both the cast and creative team, even to the homeowners who rented the house to him. Through great effort, PR tried to make it seem as though there was no validity to any of these rumors with exclusive interviews of Trank and Kinberg sitting together as if they were friends, but word was getting out, and there was no stopping the inevitable.

The Fantastic Four reboot then confirmed what we all knew, there was a huge shift in tone and wigs in the final third act of the film. On Monday, we learned of the many problems that plagued the production of the film were aired out. Now a new report is out revealing just how problematic Trank has been during the filming process, and it is supporting previous reports of his strange behavior. More on this below.
