Alicia Vikander cast in Tomb Raider

It was not that long ago when it was being reported that Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley was being courted to play the lead role of Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider reboot. The idea sounded good on paper, as she has proven herself to be able to carry the weight of an iconic franchise on her shoulders, but seeing as her schedule would keep her from starring in another franchise, it would have been impossible to cast her in the new reboot.

Well, it didn’t take long for Warner Bros. to settle on a different actress and one that has appeared in a couple of their films. New reports confirm that Alicia Vikander has been named as the new Lara Croft. More on the story below.

Daisy Ridley In Star Wars The Force Awakens

Newcomer Daisy Ridley exploded onto the scene when she commanded the screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The actress was universally praised for her role in that film, and with such a stellar performance, she was bound to receive many offers to star in other films.

Seeing as she can carry the weight of one franchise on her shoulders, it looks like she is in the running to play the lead character in the new Tomb Raider reboot. More on the story below.

My first memories of the Tomb Raider franchise are of an exaggeratedly buxom young woman in an outfit that was more bikini than khaki expedition wear. Several video games and a couple of films later, I was not any more impressed than I had been originally. The stories were good, the game play entertaining, but it always seemed a bit sexist. Yes, I know that was probably the point, but I prefer to have a story rest on its content rather than mammary glands. But it’s comics like this one, Tomb Raider II #1, that redeem the franchise for me.

Tomb Raider Image

The planned reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise has found itself a director. It’s being reported that Norwegian director Roar Uthaug has been set to helm the movie for GK Films, MGM and Warner Brothers. Uthaug’s previous credits include Cold Prey, Magic Silver, Escape, and The Wave, which was good enough to be chosen as Norway’s submission to be considered for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nomination.

The project is also looking at a new writer. Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the writer behind the Black List script titled Hibernation, is in negotiations to pen the latest draft of the screenplay.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

So far the only gameplay we had seen from the Tomb Raider reboot sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was set in the ice and snow and unforgiving cold.

A new gameplay demo was presented during Xbox’s presentation at Gamescom 2015 this week, and in it Lara Croft has escaped the wintry environment and now instead finds herself dealing with bad guys in some torrential downpours.

You can check out the new Rise of the Tomb Raider gameplay demo below.
