Colin Farrell Confirmed For ‘Total Recall’ Remake; Will Not Be In 3D

While speaking to Collider recently during a press day for The Green Hornet at the Sony Pictures lot, producer Neal Moritz shared a significant confirmation on another of his projects: Total Recall.

Though called a remake of sorts with the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie of the same name being so popular, this new movie is more of a second adaptation of Philip K. Dick‘s short novel, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale. But who would play the lead role Arnie once played?

Well, according to Moritz, the actor they’ve secured is Colin Farrell. This fits with a subtle-yet-interesting trend of casting much smaller gentlemen in roles Schwarzenegger once played. It also makes plenty of sense — no point in getting your actor compared to the former bodybuilder when you can go in an entirely different direction.

Columbia Pictures presidents Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach have announced that Underworld director Len Wiseman is in final negotiations to direct their remake of the 1990 Paul Verhoeven science fiction favorite, Total Recall. Though still at a late negotiation stage, a press release was put out by the studio (via /Film) to make the announcement, meaning this is a done deal.

Wiseman is best known as the director of Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. He also directed Live Free or Die Hard and is expected to return to helm Underworld 4. He was at one time attached to bring us the feature adaptation of hit video game Gears of War, but budgetary restrictions have that project facing an uncertain future.

You could make a case for Arnold Schwarzenegger as the greatest action movie superstars of all time. This is a case you would win every single time, because there is no one that tops this man when it comes to the genre. Regardless of what you think of him as a Governor, there is no arguing that his presence in movies has been missed for some years now; and thus, we retreat back to his best works to get our Schwarzenegger fix.

On the bright side, there’s sets like this one being released from time-to-time to help your binging needs. This particular set includes Red Heat, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Running Man, and Total Recall.

When I got the chance to review this new four-movie collector’s set of Schwarzenegger flicks, I jumped at the chance for a couple of reasons: One was because I shockingly had not seen two of them; and also because I even-more shockingly didn’t own any of them.

There’s obviously a good chance that you’ve seen all of the movies reviewed here and know whether you would jump all over this set or pass it by. For this, think of these reviews as more of a recap and my own personal opinion of these intense flicks that likely hold a great deal of nostalgia for many of us.

Columbia To Remake ‘Total Recall’

Total Recall

Another cherished science fiction movie is heading in for a makeover. The popular Arnold Schwarzenegger Mars movie we all know as Total Recall is being remade at Columbia Pictures with producer Neil H. Moritz in final negotiations to help bring the project to life.

The original movie followed Schwarzenegger’s character as he jumped between dream and reality after he sets off on a virtual vacation to Mars, even though he was warned of the possible negative effects. He eventually finds out that his brain had already been messed with and his whole life was fake. This sends him off to Mars for real to try and find out the truth about who he was, and to fight an evil dictator of sorts who controls the low air flow of a city filled with poor, deformed mutant folk.

Seeing this movie for the first time as a child… on Thanksgiving — I was pretty much scarred for life. There is, however, no denying the brilliance in how director Paul Verhoeven handled the racy, dark (er, red) world with a severely scary underbelly. Along with Robocop (also being remade), you just do not see it done like this anymore. A true shame.
