Netflix's Stranger Things

Netflix has released a trailer for an upcoming series that those who grew up with ’80s supernatural thrillers and science fiction along the lines of the works of Steven Spielberg are likely going to be very excited about.

The show is titled Stranger Things, and it definitely has an E.T. the Extra Terrestrial vibe going on. The series tells the story of a town searching for a boy who vanishes without a trace, and the strange girl who shows up out of nowhere. It comes from Wayward Pines writers and producers the Duffner brothers, Matt Duffner and Ross Duffner, who handle writing, directing, and showrunning duties, and executive producers Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel), who also directs episodes, and Dan Cohen (The Spectacular Now, Table 19). Starring is Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Matthew Modine.

Edward Scissorhands

It has been almost twenty-five years since Tim Burton‘s imaginative fable Edward Scissorhands enchanted audiences around the world with its haunting visuals, dark humor, and a performance by Johnny Depp in the title role that to this day continues to be ranked among the superstar’s finest.

Later this fall, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will re-release Scissorhands on Blu-ray to mark the occasion of its silver anniversary. The first time the film was released in the format, it received a disappointing transfer and a few modest bonus features (including a director’s commentary), but the commemorative set Fox has assembled will undergo a much-needed restoration and most likely be upgraded in the supplements department. It will also come packaged with some collectible goodies inspired by the film.

The new Blu-ray will be available for pre-order at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and those attendees of the convention who take the plunge will also be able to get their hands on an exclusive limited-edition lithograph created by artist Mark Englert in collaboration with Gallery 1988.

You can check out both the Blu-ray package art and the lithograph, provided by Entertainment Weekly, here below.

Don’t call him a hitman, contract killer, or mass murderer – Richard Kuklinski will forever be known to history as The Iceman; a mob enforcer named as such for freezing his victims to confuse the authorities as to the time of death. Portrayed by Michael Shannon in the Ariel Vromen-directed biopic, The Iceman is a crime drama worth your attention.

Spanning several decades, The Iceman starts in the 1960s, first depicting Kuklinski’s first date with future wife Deborah (Winona Ryder). Coming from a tortured and abusive background, Kuklinski and his brother Joseph (Stephen Dorff) fall into lives of delinquency, and eventually murder. While Joseph is caught and imprisoned, Richard ends up becoming a mob enforcer for Roy DeMeo (Ray Liotta) as he attempts to also have a normal family life with his wife and daughters.

It’s Jason Statham Vs. James Franco In The First Trailer For Sylvester Stallone-Scripted ‘Homefront’

Homefront

What do you want from your action movie trailer? No matter what it is you may seek, the first trailer for Homefront is here to bring it to you.

Homefront has a very interesting pedigree for typical flick where Jason Statham kicks a bunch of outmatched morons right square in the buttocks without once cracking a smile. It was directed by Gary Fleder (Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead) and based on the novel by Chuck Logan – the sixth featuring his popular hero, ex-Minnesota cop Phil Broker. The film version was adapted by none other than Statham’s valiant Expendables leader Sylvester Stallone and relocates the plot from a small Minnesota town to a rural Southern community. Statham’s Phil Broker is now an ex-D.E.A. agent who moved down South with his daughter to live the quiet life and ride horses every day. All seems well until the day Broker crosses paths with local meth kingpin Gator, played by….wait for it….James Franco. Needless to say, a lot of blood is going to be spilled by the time this movie rolls its end credits.

You can watch it in all its deranged splendor here below.

Summer is here. The time has arrived for film buffs to catch up on films they may have overlooked in recent months. Put Frankenweenie on that list, an overlooked Tim Burton feature with funkiness and flaws a plenty. Let’s dig up my review of Frankenweenie on Blu-ray in this edition of Disney In Depth.

The dog, man’s best friend. They possess the ceaseless loyalty, friendship and empathy that most humans only wish they could have. No wonder why the loss of a dog can bring about such sadness. Burton infuses immense passion and consideration into this pet project of his, finally adapted into this full-length, entirely stop-motion feature.
