Geeks of Doom's Exclusive Coverage of SDCC 2009

The young stars of The Twilight Saga: New Moon made an appearance on Thursday at the San Diego Comic-Con, where thousands of Twilight fans not only descended upon the Hall H auditorium for the event, but many had camped out outside the hall for over two days.

Yes, people, there was Twilight madness at the Con, much like last year [read SDCC 08: Summit Entertainment’s ‘Twilight’]. But, unlike the previous year’s panel, this time the fans stopped screaming long enough to let the actor’s answers questions.

Before I get into my coverage of the panel, which contains a description of the new footage that was shown, you should know you can check out the 43 photos from the panel here below of panelists Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Ashley Greene, along with director Chris Weitz.

The crowd went wild as the stars of New Moon were introduced, but oddly enough, when Stewart came out decked out in full Joan Jett attire (she’s playing the rocker in the upcoming Runaways film), the cheers turned a bit to groans. Both Kirsten and Pattinson behaved awkwardly while sitting on the panel, squirming in their seats and stuttering over their answers (they were the same way at last year’s panel). On the other hand, Green and Lautner were very talkative and open with the audience.

Much of the discussion revolved around Lautner’s transformation for the new film, in which he plays Jacob Black. The Jacob Black character was seen in the first movie, but he was younger and let’s just say, not quite yet developed. For New Moon, Lautner had to work with a trainer to gain weight and bulk up for the role, where we’ll be seeing a bit of shirtless action from Jacob (that’s right Team Jacob people). Lautner said that Jacob goes through a lot mentally and emotionally, but it was the physical transformation that was the most challenging. He said he “worked very hard to transform his body for the fans.”

Lautner also talked about having to film “half-naked” in the cold, raining Vancouver weather.

It was quite cold, and we did this one scene where it was raining; they used rain tower rain and it’s so cold. All I was wearing only jean shorts and it was a long scene and they did the scene out there for 12 hours, it was cold. It was hard. But I’m doing it all for you guys.”

The actor stressed that Vancouver is “a beautiful place, but its cold and wet. It’s just not fun not wearing any clothes there.”

That’s dedication!

Stewart also talked about how Bella’s world is expanding in the new film, and she goes through a deep emotional trauma that was difficult for the actress. Stewart says the last day of film in Italy was particularly hard. “It was a charged moment,” she said. “I didn’t believe that it was done, I felt like I couldn’t stand up.”

The cast was asked if they did their own stunts. Pattinson responded that he didn’t have to do much in the film except stand on a box in front of a green screen. Stewart admitted to not doing any of her own stunts and that the scenes of her riding a motorcycle were filmed with her being pulled by “on the back of this “dorky rig type thing” adding that “It was cool at all.”

Lautner, on the other hand, did many of his own stunts. Director Chris Weitz said, “Taylor did every single stunt he could possible get his hands on, except for the ones that the insurance company wouldn’t allow. Rob just sorta stood there looking good really.”

Aside from seeing a newly buff Lautner shirtless and doing many of his own stunts in the new film, we’ll also get to hear him speak in Quileute, the Native American language of Jacob Black’s tribe.

The cast was asked what they were looking forward to most in next films in the series. Greene said she’s very excited to work with director David Slade and also about an intense fight scene. Lautner is excited about the height of the love triangle, the sleeping bag scene, and when Edward and Jacob have to become friends to protect Bella. Stewart said, “I can’t wait until I get pregnant” with Pattinson quickly adding “…being involved in the Caesarian. I just can’t wait.”

Director Chris Weitz assured the crowd that they followed the book by Stephenie Meyer very closely. “Our fidelity to the books is the key to making the movies works,” he said.

Aside from talking about the films, Pattinson touched lightly upon his musical endeavors. During the Q&A portion of the panel, a fan asked the actor if he would be doing open mike nights every again. He replied that he would, but that he’s “kind of a pussy, I guess, that’s the problem.” He says everyone should do it because “it’s healthy for the soul.”

Needless to say, audience reaction to the panel was extremely positive, especially to the two new clips that were debuted. Check out the footage description here below.

Footage Description

Jacob and Bella with Bella on a motorcycle.

The scene opens with Bella mounding a motorcycle with Jacob standing next to her. He’s teaching here where the break, crutch, and gas are and as he does, he touches her hand. They look at each other, and then she remembers Edward touching her hand like that and she snaps. She unexpectedly rides off on the motorcycle with eagerness, but as she’s riding, she sees Edward everywhere in her path. Then she realizes she can’t stop the bike. “How do I stop?” she screams back to Jacob. “Bank it, hit the brake!” Jacob yells back. Bella tries to stop, but goes flying off the bike. Jacob jumps on his bike and rides to her. She’s bleeding from the head. She apologizes for bleeding. “Tt’s just blooded, Bella, no big deal,” Jacob assures her. Jacob take off his shirt [audience goes crazy] to put it against her bleeding head. “You’re so beautiful,” she tells him. He smiles and answers back, “How hard did you hit your head?” New Moon title credits come up.

Bella trying to save Edward in Italy.

Alice and Bella are in Italy racing to save Edward. At first they are in a car, but the streets are crowded with people in red hooded robes. Alice tells Bella has to go “because you’re the only one he can’t see coming.” Bella runs from the car, maneuvering through the crowded streets. There’s several slow motion shots of her movements. As she pushes through the crowd, she runs towards a scaffold, where Edward is seen walking towards from the other way. As Edward gets closer, we see he looks ill. He starts to take off his shirt; Bella sees him and runs through a fountains to get to him. Edward looks down and Bella shouts to him “Stop, stop, no Edward, don’t!” as he goes to step down. New Moon title credits come up.
