Zoe Kravitz Joins ‘The Batman’ As Catwoman

Zoe Kravitz

It has been somewhat of a long and winding road for WB’s next Batman standalone film. Considering all of the setbacks that they had to go through and the difficulties launching it with Ben Affleck’s short-lived stint as the character, you can’t really blame the studio for wanting to take a fresh approach. And hopefully, they will be getting that from writer and director Matt Reeves‘ tentatively titled The Batman.

The film has already cast Robert Pattinson as the world’s greatest detective, and if all goes according to plan, he will be joined by Jeffrey Wright, who will play Commissioner Gordon, and Jonah Hill who could be playing either the Riddler or the Penguin. But as they get all of their talks straightened out, it looks like the film will be adding a heroine to the mix. According to new reports, Zoe Kravitz will be playing Catwoman. More on that below.

The Wrap says Kravitz will be joining Pattinson in The Batman as Catwoman. This was later confirmed by Reeves, who simply tweeted out a GIF of Kravitz speaking into a phone with the caption “Hello.”

That’s a pretty simple yet direct confirmation. However, we still don’t know anything about the film itself. Aside from the fact that Reeves wants to make a detective noir film, there isn’t much else that we know about the film. But it appears that Kravitz wasn’t the only one in the running, with Zazie Beetz and Eiza González also up for the role. But she was pretty high up there. Top three, in fact. Here’s what Justin Kroll of THR had to say.

And this wouldn’t be the first time that Kravitz was in the running for a role in a Batman-related film.

In an interview with Nylon, the actor revealed that she had auditioned for a small role in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. However, she didn’t get it because of, all things, her ethnicity:

“In the last Batman movie [The Dark Knight Rises], they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t “˜going urban.’ It was like, “˜What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, “˜Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?'”

That seems like a very awful reason not to get a role. Even if it was a small one. Which is fine because, at that time, she got an even better action role in Mad Max: Fury Road. But now we will get to see her in another comic book movie, her third following roles in X-Men: First Class and a voice role as Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The Batman opens in theaters on June 25, 2021.
