One movie that isn’t very far along but is on a lot of people’s movie-radar is Paul. The only thing we ever really knew about Paul was that the movie would include one of the best on-screen duos working today in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). Also, that this movie would not be directed by their normal captain Edgar Wright (though he will be executive producing), but by Superbad and Adventureland director Greg Motolla.
What we do know about the movie is that it sounds like one of those perfect geek fests in which two slackers head to Area 51 after Comic Con and find themselves an alien who needs their help to get home. With that everyone is sold, nothing else needs to be said, but now we’re learning a lot more about what’s going into the project.
On a podcast from Sundance, Mottola discussed the technical issues going into this movie:
That movie is a far more technically challenging movie than Adventureland was because one of the main characters is a fully non-existent creature. He’s basically an alien who may be, let’s say, 70% CGI and the big challenge is that he needs to be a very funny, comedic method actor. It’s not the kind of CGI character where we people to say “˜Oh wow, look what they did, that’s so cool’ it’s actually the kind of CGI character where we want people to just treat like another actor in the film, and he should be fully believable and multi-faceted and has to give a great performance, he just doesn’t exist. We’ve been doing a lot of test trying to figure out how to pull that one off.
What’s even better sounding than all of this? Mottola confessed that the movie will even be R-rated! Considering the script is written by Pegg and Frost, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it’s still an exciting thing to know.
Adult aimed humor with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and a little freakin’ alien? Is this heaven?
Oh, happy day.

I hope I’ll see the sight of Simon and Nick on set, having to pretend as though there is a little extra terrestrial with them
this will be the greatest movie in the history of films… well, one of them. I also can’t wait for the next blood and icecream movie, worlds end!!!
