| Con Report: Wizard World Philly 2009 |
By Zena Metal Though most hardcore comic fans focused on Heroes Con this past weekend, the noticeably stripped-down Wizard World Philly convention still set the stage for some exciting previews, a little bit of unexpected drama and, since I was involved — some good, silly fun.
Going into WWP, I knew I was on a mission. There were promises to help out the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, I was asked to cover a few panels for another site, and almost immediately after I arrived on Saturday afternoon, me dear friends (and consiglieri of comics) Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner asked me to watch their booth while they partook in their own panel event. “Here, have a cheesesteak,” said Jimmy, handing me a warm, salty-smelling small missile. Huh? Apparently, Jimmy mentioned in his Newsarama blog that he’d give a “free crappy sketch” to anyone who brought him the classic Philly munch-out food. The result? No less than 10 free heroes. While I thanked him for it, I knew I wouldn’t be wasting my calories on it when the delights of the Reading Terminal Market were mere feet away from the convention center.

| Official Images & Concept Art From Tim Burton’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ |

It appears to be all about Tim Burton‘s hybrid version of Alice in Wonderland recently, as multiple new images of the characters and some new concept art has been unleashed by Disney. Yahoo! has the set of five new character images that Disney has released; featured is a new look at Alice (Mia Wasikowska), along with our first real look at Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Also, USA Today is presenting three new massive zoomable concept images — one you can see below, the others can be found by following the link. The movie will mix live-action, CGI, and motion-capture technologies to create a fittingly wild and bizarre world — perfect for the imagination of Tim Burton. One thing that was not known, is that this new version is more of a sequel to Lewis Carroll‘s Through the Looking-Glass. The story will apparently pick up ten years later with Alice, now 17 years old, escaping a ritzy party and following a white rabbit down a hole, which brings her back to Wonderland. When she arrives, Alice does not remember her first visit as a young girl, but the beings of Wonderland — ready to fight back against the evil Queen — look to her to assist them. | DVD Review: Dexter: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray) |
 Dexter
The Complete Second Season, Blu-ray Edition
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, Erik King, Lauren Velez
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release date: May 9, 2009
One of the most original and entertaining shows on TV returned for a second season with vigilante serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C Hall). After following Dexter’s journey of self-discovery in the first season, this time around viewers watch Dexter struggle with new, complicated emotions as he tries to evolve as a person and a killer. The second season of the hit Showtime series has some serious strengths and weaknesses. First and foremost, the plot goes to the obvious logical step in exploring Dexter’s world by seeing what would happen if Dexter’s crimes were discovered. When a group of scuba divers discover the bodies of Dexter’s victims, he must struggle with keeping up appearances while trying to cover tracks he never thought would be uncovered. All the while, Sgt. Doakes (Erik King), who was simply suspicious of Dexter in the first season, is now convinced Dexter is hiding something, and stalks him everywhere. This makes Dexter’s usual nighttime activities impossible. The stress of controlling his impulses, avoiding suspicion, and coming to terms with having killed his own brother, Dexter’s internal turmoil is increased ten-fold.

| DVD Review: ‘Reaper’ Season 2 |
 Reaper
Season 2
Starring Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Rick Gonzalez, Missy Peregrym, Ray Wise
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: June 9, 2009
The second season of Reaper had the unfortunate disposition of being seemingly cursed from the very start. After a highly-acclaimed first season gained it a large cult following, the show’s future was still in danger, and the writer’s strike did not help their cause. Eventually, when the dust settled a bit, it was decided that the show would get more of a second chance than a second season with a shortened 13-episode run. Sadly, this uphill battle ended like the finale of Glory, and at this moment Reaper has been canceled with only a few small chances at another network being it’s savior (Read: “˜Reaper’ Canceled: The CW Decides It Wants To Be Just Like Fox When It Grows Up). This of course isn’t the first time a great show was killed too early, and even in this depressing hole, Reaper still has plenty to offer those who have yet to see it. Reaper is a show about Sam (Bret Harrison), a regular guy who works at a home improvement super store called The Work Bench with his best friends Ben (Rick Gonzalez) and Sock (Tyler Labine), as well as his love interest/friend Andi (Missy Peregrym). On his 21st birthday, Sam discovers that his parents (thinking that they would never have children) sold the soul of their first born child in order to heal his father who was very sick at the time. After he turned 21, the Devil (Ray Wise) comes to claim him and set him off on his new eternal job as the Devil’s bounty hunter, who catches the souls of the damned who escape hell. The show for the most part sounds like a horror movie, and certainly does have scary content, but rest-assured, it’s an incredibly fun and funny series.
