Comic Review: The Deadbeat
The Deadbeat
Story and Words by Jeremy Massie
Alterna Comics
After finishing The Deadbeat (Alterna Comics) a serious, graphically told story wrapped in the familiar guise of super-hero fiction, I’m left wanting more. The story, written and illustrated by Jeremy Massie, follows an unnamed super-powered man who whose average day consists of going to the local pub to get drunk off of the chocolate-flavored beverage “YooHoo” served in a dirty glass — the only thing that’ll affect him due to his inherent invulnerability. His retirement, so to speak, came as a result of an epic battle with a mad scientist that killed hundreds of civilians, which included his wife. Distraught from this loss, he sends his infant daughter Vera to live with her aunt. Years later, he receives a letter informing him of Vera’s death, allowing him to further plunge into a shell of his former life. When Vera, now fully grown with powers of her own, appears at the pub, our invulnerable man comes out of retirement with a new outlook on life.

‘Meatballs’ Takes A Number, Steps In Line For Remake Treatment

We can all safely assume that if there’s a movie that you love that was made between 1979 and 1993, it’s going to be remade soon. All-the-same, we must try and cover each as it is announced, and today’s remake announcement is for 1979’s Meatballs. The original movie takes place at Camp North Star — a dirty, low-class camp for people who don’t want to spend a lot of money to basically just dump their kids off and enjoy the summer to themselves. A young boy named Rudy (Chris Makepeace) is sent there, and he’s your typical quiet, shy kid who stays to himself. Tripper (Bill Murray), a member of the CIT (Counselor in Training) program notices Rudy staying in his shell and reaches out to him and they become friends — each helping the other in different fashions. While these two main characters are bonding, the camp itself is in a heated battle with the feared cross-lake rivals, Camp Mohawk. As we’ve seen in so many movies since then, the camps naturally must compete against each other in various events to determine the champion.

Universal Studios Hollywood Has Officially Re-Opened Courthouse Square

Universal Studios Hollywood has officially re-opened one of the more famous areas of their lot: Courthouse Square. If you’re not familiar with the incredibly long past year that Universal has had: last June a massive fire destroyed four acres of the studio property (Read: Fire Raging At Universal Studios Hollywood). Since then they have been hard at work not only rebuilding the famous studio, lots, and visitor tour — but also on making everything bigger and better than ever before with new, state-of-the-art technologies and attractions. First came the announcement of their initial re-opening and their tram tour with insane new audio and video capabilities (Read: Universal Studios Hollywood Backlot Set To Return To Action After Fire). Next came word of the colossal return of one of their main attractions: King Kong. Only this time he would be so much more realistic than the famous giant animatronic beast they once had (Read: Universal Studios To Unveil New “˜King Kong’ Attraction In 2010). Now that we’re all caught up, fans of the studio/park and filmmakers alike will be pleased at the latest announcement that Courthouse Square is now open once again. To celebrate the re-opening, a massive parade was thrown with many different characters from various movies that have been filmed there. Click over to see some images from the re-opening parade.
