The Discovery Channel‘s most popular week of the year is without doubt the massive Shark Week. Even though the hugely-popular traditional summer event began last night, we wanted to send a quick little reminder to all of you who may still be unaware that it’s going on right this moment!
Shark Week is now on its 22nd annual broadcast, and just like every other year, they have some vicious and awesome new shows that the shark fan in all of us just can’t miss.
Their main event of the week is a special called Blood in the Water. The two-hour show tells the story of a multitude of shark attacks in New Jersey in 1916. These events were the actual events that inspired Steven Spielberg’s classic ocean horror movie, Jaws. The events were also at a time when people just didn’t know anything about these sea monsters, so as you can imagine, mass chaos ensued.
Other programs that will air throughout the week including special episodes of Survivorman, Mythbusters, Man vs Wild, and other popular Discovery Channel shows that focus on sharks. Also, there will be many different specials about many different species of shark for you to gorge on.
For me, the Great White shark is my co-favorite animal on the planet, so anything with them has me positively possessed by the TV. One of the best Great White specials ever made is the special that showcases the mysterious flying sharks of Seal Island — the only place on the planet with the mammoth Great Whites literally leaping completely out of the water after shooting themselves at seals. This year will likely have many specials making visits to this seemingly-mythical little island home to thousands of seals and surrounded by hundreds of one of the most dangerous creatures known to man.
This is what TV is all about, ladies and gentlemen.
