Kevin Williamson Talks ‘Scream 4’ & If Wes Craven Will Return

The Movie God   |  @   |

Scream

It is somewhat of a slow news day, but here’s a little more information on Scream 4 and the proposed trilogy that it may be the start of. Writer Kevin Williamson was out talking about his new show, The Vampire Diaries (which has a challenge in front of it, coming out in an already vampire overloaded time period and also being one of the shows that knocked off the fantastic Reaper), and ended up talking quite a bit about the newest chapter in the Scream franchise.

Williamson got back into the fact that it was really exciting to know that David Arquette and Courteney Cox were coming back and that their story ten years after the events of the first trilogy would be the “heart and soul” of the new movies. He also revealed that the Ghostface mask would be back, but that it might be “another one,” whatever that might mean. Speaking of picking up the story a decade later, there was even mention of the wonderful Stab movies — the horror movie within the movies that basically parodies Scream — and how absurd that franchise would be.

When asked where the project stands and what the chances are that director Wes Craven would return, Williamson had this to say:

Well, I’m going to finish the script in the next couple of months. Then we’ll just start the process. Wes [Craven] wants to read a script before he’ll sign on, which makes sense. We’ve sort of chatted about it. I’m sure he would love to get back in the saddle. We’re kind of a family. We’re a Scream family that still exists, so the idea that we wouldn’t have dad sitting at the head of the table doesn’t make sense, so I’m going to try to. We’re going to make that happen.

Williamson also answered the question every single skeptic on the planet has been wanting to know: why even do another Scream, let alone a whole new trilogy?

Oh, well, they’ve been bugging us. Bob Weinstein has been bugging me for 100 billion years. ‘Where’s Scream 4? Let’s do Scream 4! Let’s just do it, Kevin, let’s just do it.’ Wes and I were like, ‘No way, no way, no way.’ Then, finally, I was taking some time off, and I was sitting around going, ‘OK, what if I had to do Scream 4? If I had to do Scream 4, what would I [do]?’ I wasn’t interested, but a trilogy? Now I’d be interested. Can we do that? Can we pull that off? Could we actually develop a trilogy? Then I started thinking about the story, and I created three different chapters, I broke it out and I got really excited about it.

I remain quite excited to see where this project goes. If I could speak to Kevin Williamson directly, I would still demand that they find a way to bring back the Jamie Kennedy character…then I would probably walk away with my head hanging as he pointed and laughed at my silliness. All-in-all though, Scream and Scream 2 are great horror movies and just plain good times, so there’s nothing not to like here. Oh, and keep in mind — Kevin Williamson only did the first two movies; he let someone else write Scream 3.

  1. I am very excited to hear the news about the new scream trilogy. Let me just start off by saying i am one of the biggest fans of Kevin Williamson’s work. However, I do not agree with the whole “Scream 3” sucking. I loved the movie. I thought it was very interesting and the ending was awesome. Never seen it coming! So, as excited as i am about these new movies and i am very excited, Please stop dissing Scream 3. Some people actually loved the movie!
