Shootin' the Sh*t with Kevin SmithKevin Smith is a household name here at Geeks of Doom HQ. He a comic book and movie writer, a movie director, a frequent guest on the podcast of our friends over at Slashfilm, and he attends comic conventions yearly with the sole aim of making a room full of 5,000 geeks laugh for an hour. His commitment to all things geek is beyond reproach. So when our friends over at Titan Books asked us if we’d like to run an exclusive excerpt from his new book Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith, as well as a giveaway, I nearly broke gmail answering ‘Hell Yes!’ so fast.

So, without further preamble here’s an excerpt from Shootin’ the Sh*t where Kevin Smith and his daughter Harley (you gotta love that he named his daughter after a Batman villain) discuss the finer points of old school Mix Tapes vs. the new school of iPod culture.

Lastly, check below the excerpt where you can enter to win your very own copy of Shootin’ the Sh*t from Geeks of Doom.

From SModcast 54: SModder’s Day

Harley Smith: Remember when we were listening to the radio yesterday and you were talking about tape? And I said, “Well that was ancient history, when nobody had an iPod!”

Kevin Smith: Yes, I was trying to explain a mix-tape to you, and how people used to make mix-tapes. Like, in high school I used to make a lot of mix-tapes, put a bunch of different songs on and give it to a girl that you were sweet on, or something like that. And you were like, “That’s ancient technology!”

HS: That is ancient technology! Everybody has iPods now!

KS: Yeah, but back then we didn’t have iPods.

HS… or an MP3 player or something, not a tape…

KS: But the mix-tape was the forerunner of the iPod, ’cause the iPod, you essentially do the same thing, you can make these wicked mix lists, playlists…

HS: iPods are better.

KS: Hey, much better, I’m not arguing with you, I’m not saying [old man voice] “Things were better then!” I’m just saying I used to have to do it with a tape.

HS: On a tape they don’t have really cool games, like ‘Vortex’, or it shows your name and stuff.

KS: Look, I’m with you. You don’t have to sell me, I agree that the iPod is way better…

HS: … or cards, or like poker, or…

KS: I told you, I’m with you! I’m on your side, you don’t have to convince me. I was just saying what we used to do, back before the iPod.

HS: That’s scary.

KS: Do you look at me like I’m John Adams? You’re like, “How could you have ever lived without an iPod, life must have been so boring for you.”

HS: No, but it…

KS: “You must have just gotten up, eaten, pooped and slept.”

HS: A mix-tape looks so boring!

KS: No, it was a very cool thing. You put together a bunch of songs…

HS: A ‘cool’ thing?!

KS: Yes. I guarantee you, when you get older, you will put together… versions of a mix-tape. You won’t do it on audio cassette, but you’ll do it, where you put together a bunch of songs for some boy that you like. [Harley voice] “Oh, Will…”

HS: Hmmm.

KS: “Here is a mix-tape for you, that explains my feelings.”

HS: [Aghast] If Will goes on the Internet, and he hears you, you’ll be in such big trouble!

KS: I don’t think Will’s ever gonna hear this. Alright, not Will “” that little boy in the movie theater…

HS: [Even more appalled] No!

KS: “Oh, random stranger boy, I put together this collection of songs to tell you how I really feel.” I used to not only mix songs, like, we’d put songs together, but I used to put stuff between them, like little comedy bits off comedy albums, and pieces from movies, I used to record stuff off the TV, so there would be a little… a little thing to it. A little pizzazz, if you will.

HS: You mean, old time ancient history, when the dinosaurs were around, mix-tape?

KS: Yes, it was very old-timey. There was Scott Joplin music playing in the background, and we all boxed like boxing nun dolls.

HS: “Oh, random high school girl, I love you, here’s a mix-tape.”

KS: Are you making fun of me with random high school girl?

HS: “Oh random middle school girl, here’s a mix-tape.”

KS: That doesn’t bother me, I got a girl now, you can’t make fun of me.

HS: “Oh, Jennifer…”

KS: Am I supposed to be offended by that? Like am I supposed to get…

HS: Hmmm.

KS: … like you were? I’m like, “Stop it! Stop saying I love Jennifer!”

HS: Hmmm…

KS: “Oh Will…”

HS: HMMMMM!
