Green Lantern: The Animated Series

We’ve known that Green Lantern: The Animated Series was coming to Cartoon Network for a little while, and attendees at the 2010 New York Comic-COn got their first look at the series this weekend. Sadly, there wasn’t any actual footage shown, but there was plenty of concept art shown (which you can view here below), as well as a a 20-second test clip of animation.

The show will be completely animated by CG (think The Clone Wars series) and Hal Jordan and Kilowog will be the main stars of the show. The good news is that Bruce Timm will be one of the showrunners, and he’s always produced consistently good shows, so there’s no reason to think this will be any different.

Details that emerged from the panel include that the show will run for at least 26 episodes, with the first 13 episodes already planned out. The main villains of the show will be the Red Lanterns, and it sounds like the other colored Lanterns will show up at some point. Everyone may assume that Sinestro would be the ideal villain for the series, but he actually won’t be showing up, at least for the first 13 episodes, although he will be getting built up over the course of the series for his eventual reveal, and they do have plans to reveal him at some point.

While they weren’t able to reveal who the voices were, it was said that the show has been cast and that they have recorded the first 5 episodes already. If you’re expecting the same cast as the recent DC Animated movie, prepare for a disappointment. In fact, the series won’t really tie-in to the animated movie at all. Also, long-time voice director Andrea Romano won’t be working on the series, which may be a bad thing, as she has been a big part of the success of DC’s animated shows.

The 20 seconds shown were just test footage used to select who would do the actual animation, so we didn’t really learn what the series would truly look like, but the scene showed Hal and Kilowog fighting a group of Manhunters. It looked like they had the energy constructs down, and from what I’ve heard, the show should be pretty exciting and accessible enough for those new to Green Lantern, but still satisfying to long-time fans. The show is about a year away from premiering, so we’ve still got a lot of waiting to do, but there was still plenty to be excited about.

  1. Great – thanks for sharing these. This show looks like a badass space opera / superhero series.

You’ve got Hal Jordan, Kilowog, Appa Ali Apsa, Ganthet, Carol Ferris. Even Atrocitus and Zilius Zox. WOW!

Can’t wait to see this show when it debuts.
